Purpose

The Advanced Manufacturing Technical Training & Documentation Specialist is an advanced practitioner responsible for independently capturing, developing, and standardizing technical knowledge across Advanced Manufacturing. This role partners directly with engineers, technicians, programmers, specialists, and operations leaders to translate complex manufacturing processes, technical requirements, and lessons learned into clear, practical, and scalable documentation and training.

The Specialist will own complex documentation and training assignments, identify opportunities to improve documentation systems and standards, and provide technical guidance to less-experienced contributors. This role directly supports the Advanced Manufacturing Academy by developing training and qualification content that reduces reliance on tribal knowledge, accelerates workforce development, and enables consistent execution across teams, shifts, work centers, and facilities.
The Role
  • Independently develop, write, edit, and maintain complex SOPs, Work Instructions, process specifications, troubleshooting guides, equipment guides, checklists, and technical training materials.
  • Translate complex or ambiguous manufacturing processes and technical requirements into clear, concise, and executable documentation with limited managerial direction.
  • Work directly with engineers, technicians, programmers, and other subject-matter experts to capture technical knowledge and determine the appropriate documentation or training solution.
  • Spend significant time on the manufacturing floor observing processes, equipment operation, troubleshooting, and operator interaction to ensure documentation accurately represents production needs.
  • Develop technical training and qualification content for the Advanced Manufacturing Academy, including learning modules, practical exercises, visual aids, knowledge checks, and qualification criteria.
  • Convert tribal knowledge, lessons learned, recurring production issues, and proven troubleshooting methods into standardized and reusable technical content.
  • Identify documentation and training gaps and independently drive solutions that improve process clarity, quality, efficiency, and repeatability.
  • Establish and continuously improve documentation standards, templates, terminology, workflows, and best practices across Advanced Manufacturing.
  • Lead small documentation, training, or knowledge-management projects and pilots from problem identification through implementation.
  • Support new equipment, technology, and process introductions by defining and developing the documentation and training required for successful operational handoff.
  • Partner with document control, engineering, quality, and operations to maintain appropriate revision control, technical accuracy, approvals, and traceability.
  • Develop visual and multimedia technical content using photographs, diagrams, process flows, equipment screenshots, videos, and other methods to simplify complex technical concepts.
  • Provide technical guidance and mentorship to peers and subject-matter experts developing manufacturing documentation or training content.
  • Build scalable documentation and knowledge-management practices that can be deployed across multiple work centers and manufacturing facilities.
Basic Qualifications
  • Ability to lawfully access information and technology that is subject to US export controls
  • 5+ years of experience in technical writing, manufacturing documentation, technical training, engineering documentation, manufacturing operations, or a related technical field; or equivalent combination of technical education and relevant experience.
  • Advanced knowledge of technical documentation development within manufacturing, engineering, or another technically demanding environment.
  • Demonstrated ability to independently manage complex assignments and convert ambiguous technical information into clear, actionable documentation.
  • Strong understanding of SOPs, Work Instructions, process specifications, troubleshooting guides, training materials, and controlled technical documentation.
  • Strong written communication, technical interviewing, editing, organization, and attention-to-detail skills.
  • Ability to effectively extract technical knowledge from engineers, technicians, programmers, operators, and other subject-matter experts.
  • Ability to interpret engineering drawings, process flows, equipment documentation, specifications, and manufacturing terminology.
  • Demonstrated ability to identify process gaps, develop solutions, and improve documentation or training systems with limited direction.
  • Ability to manage multiple technically demanding workstreams while maintaining accuracy, quality, efficiency, and repeatability.
  • Ability to collaborate across engineering, operations, quality, training, and other functional teams.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience within aerospace, automotive, defense, advanced manufacturing, or another highly regulated manufacturing environment.
  • Experience developing technical training, qualification programs, or content for a technical academy or Learning Management System (LMS).
  • Working knowledge of advanced manufacturing processes such as CNC machining, automated assembly, robotics, surface processing, cleaning, inspection/metrology, or automation.
  • Experience with document control, revision control, engineering change management, and Quality Management Systems (QMS).
  • Familiarity with AS9100 or similar regulated manufacturing quality systems.
  • Experience leading small technical documentation, training, process-improvement, or knowledge-management projects.
  • Experience creating visual and multimedia technical content, including diagrams, photographs, videos, screen captures, and process flows.
  • Experience developing documentation standards, templates, and best practices that improve consistency and scalability across an organization.
  • Demonstrated ability to mentor or provide technical guidance to peers without formal people-management responsibility.
Work Environment
  • Combination of office and active manufacturing-floor environments.
  • Regular collaboration with engineering, operations, quality, technicians, programmers, and other technical subject-matter experts.
  • Frequent time spent observing manufacturing processes, equipment operation, setup, inspection, troubleshooting, and employee training.
  • Work may involve technically demanding manufacturing environments containing CNC equipment, automated machinery, robotics, inspection equipment, chemical processing, and other industrial systems.
  • Requires ownership, collaboration, initiative, sound technical judgment, and a strong quality mindset.
  • May support documentation and training initiatives across multiple work centers, shifts, programs, and manufacturing facilities.
