What we needWe are looking for an Advanced Industrial Controls Engineer (HMI) to join our Industrial Controls Systems (ICS) team within our Engineering organization. Your job will be to design, build, and standardize Ignition-based Human Machine Interface (HMI) applications that provide operators and technicians with a clear, reliable view of the automated systems running in our customers' warehouses. This role will help deliver intuitive, scalable HMI solutions that support system performance, safety, and operational efficiency.
What we doThe Industrial Controls Systems (ICS) team is part of the Engineering organization which is responsible for designing, developing, and supporting the industrial control systems that power Symbotic's warehouse automation platform. The team partners across software, controls, and safety engineering to deliver reliable automation solutions for customer sites.
What you'll do- Design and build Ignition 8 (Vision and Perspective) HMI applications for automated cells, pick stations, lifts, conveyors, and safety/access systems.
- Read and interpret PLC tag structures and UDTs using Rockwell Studio 5000/RSLogix while partnering with PLC engineers to develop reliable HMI applications.
- Establish HMI coding standards, style guides, and reusable template libraries to drive consistency across projects.
- Develop safety-related HMI screens in partnership with the Safety PLC team.
- Support field commissioning, testing, and troubleshooting of HMI applications at customer and proof-of-concept sites.
- Document HMI standards, reusable libraries, and best practices while supporting knowledge sharing across the engineering team.
What you'll need- Hands-on experience developing HMI applications using Ignition 8 (Inductive Automation), including Vision and/or Perspective modules.
- Strong PLC programming experience, preferably with Rockwell Studio 5000/RSLogix.
- Experience developing operator-facing interfaces for industrial or material handling equipment, including alarms, diagnostics, navigation, and access control.
- Ability to read and interpret electrical and mechanical schematics with hands-on commissioning and testing experience.
- Experience with FactoryTalk ME/SE, Ignition scripting (Python/Jython), tag historian, and alarm management is a plus.
- Material handling or distribution center automation experience is a plus.
Our Environment- Up to 50% of travel may be required. Employees must have a valid driver's license and the ability to drive and/or fly to client and other customer locations.
- The employee is responsible for owning a credit card and managing expenses personally to be reimbursed on a bi-weekly basis.
- Location: This position is eligible for a hybrid work arrangement for employees located near our Wilmington, MA headquarters. Remote, home-based candidates may also be considered based on business needs.

The base range for this position in the posted location is $149,000.00 - $204,600.00 however, base pay offered may vary depending on job-related knowledge, skills, and experience. The compensation package includes medical, dental, vision, disability, 401K, PTO and/or other benefits.
