Full Job Description
What we need
We are looking for an Advanced Functional Safety Engineer to join our Functional Safety team within our Engineering organization. Your job will be to act as a "builder" within a newly formed group, moving beyond following existing procedures to architecting the processes that will define our future. You will own complex projects from inception to completion, creating your own timelines and influencing cross-functional teams to integrate safety into some of the world's most interesting automation technologies.

What we do
The Functional Safety Team is part of the Product Development Organization, which is responsible for the end-to-end safety lifecycle of our AI-powered robotics. Because we are a new group, we are currently building the foundation for how Symbotic handles functional safety at scale. We don't just apply standards; we find unique, innovative ways to integrate them into cutting-edge robotic systems that have never been built before.

What you'll do

  • Take Full Ownership: Lead safety-critical projects from start to finish, including the creation and management of project timelines and deliverables.

  • Build the Blueprint: Help design and implement the internal processes and engineering practices for a high-growth, new functional safety organization.

  • Influence & Collaborate: Act as a cross-functional leader, working with hardware, software, and systems teams to embed safety into the core of our tech stack.

  • Apply Standards Uniquely: Translate industry standards (ISO, IEC, RIA) into creative, practical solutions for advanced autonomous mobile robots and high-speed distribution systems.

  • Drive Growth: Use the high level of autonomy in this role to identify new areas for safety innovation and personal career advancement.

  • Field Impact: Support and validate unique automation setups at customer sites, ensuring our custom builds thrive in real-world production.

  • Travel up to 20%: Visit various sites to see your designs and processes in action.

What you'll need

  • A "Builder" Mentality: Proven experience creating processes or building functions from scratch, rather than just working within established systems.

  • Project Ownership: Demonstrated ability to manage timelines and lead complex technical projects independently.

  • Cross-Functional Influence: Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to lead and persuade teams across different engineering disciplines.

  • Technical Expertise: Minimum of 5 years driving safety and compliance in complex, high-tech systems (BS in Engineering required; Master's preferred).

  • Standard Mastery: Deep knowledge of ISO 13849, IEC 61508, or RIA R15.06, and the ability to apply them in non-traditional ways.

  • Autonomy: A self-starter who thrives when given a goal and the freedom to determine the best path to reach it.

Our environment

  • Up to 20% of travel may be required. Employees must have a valid driver's license and the ability to drive and/or fly to client and other customer locations.

  • The employee is responsible for owning a credit card and managing expenses personally to be reimbursed on a bi-weekly basis.
