Responsibilities

  • Manage operational accounting activities for insurance operations, ensuring compliance with GAAP and company policies.
  • Oversee billing, collections, cash application, and vendor disbursements to ensure financial data integrity.
  • Manage the financial close processes, including journal entries and balance sheet reconciliations.
  • Lead and develop a team of staff accountants, ensuring accuracy and timeliness of work.
  • Conduct structured progress conversations to support staff professional development.
  • Promote professionalism and collaboration aligned with company values.
  • Execute internal controls over financial reporting and assist with audit activities.

Full Job Description
What you will be doing:
  • Manage operational accounting activities supporting the company's insurance operations, ensuring financial transactions are recorded accurately and in accordance with GAAP, company policies, and regulatory requirements.
  • Oversee core operational accounting processes including billing, collections, cash application, vendor disbursements, and related general ledger activity to ensure financial data integrity and completeness.
  • Manage operational components of the monthly, quarterly, and annual financial close processes, including review of journal entries, balance sheet reconciliations, and analysis of income statement activity to ensure accurate financial reporting.
  • Lead, coach, and develop a team of staff accountants responsible for operational accounting activities, assigning and reviewing work to ensure accuracy, timeliness, and adherence to established accounting procedures.
  • Conduct timely and meaningful structured Progress and Growth conversations with staff to support professional development, engagement, and role effectiveness.
  • Promote a culture of professionalism, collaboration, and ethical conduct consistent with company policies and core values.
  • Execute and maintain internal controls over financial reporting (ICFR) within operational accounting processes in compliance with SOX requirements and support internal and external audit activities.
  • Support preparation of statutory financial statements and regulatory filings
  • Identify efficiencies and changes to strengthen accounting operations, improve control effectiveness, and enhance scalability as the organization grows.

What you have:

Education, Experience and Licensing Requirements:
  • Bachelor's degree in accounting, Finance, or related field required.
  • CPA designation or progress toward certification preferred.
  • Minimum 5 years of progressive accounting experience, preferably within insurance or financial services.
  • Minimum 2 years' experience of people leadership experience.
  • Experience operating within an internal control framework supporting financial reporting and audit requirements.
  • Some Property & Casualty insurance industry experience required.

Qualifications/Skills and Competencies:
  • Strong knowledge of GAAP accounting principles and financial reporting practices; familiarity with statutory accounting a plus
  • Strong technical accounting knowledge.
  • High attention to detail and commitment to financial accuracy and integrity.
  • Proficient analytical and reconciliation skills with the ability to identify and resolve discrepancies.
  • Understanding of internal control frameworks and financial reporting governance within a regulated environment.
  • Solid leadership skills and team development capabilities.
  • Excellent organizational and time management skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities and deadlines.
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
  • Proficient in Microsoft 365 applications including Teams, SharePoint, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook.
