Full Job Description
About the Role

We are hiring an Accounting Manager to own full-cycle accounting for a portfolio of senior living communities - independent living, assisted living, and memory care - and to lead a two-person offshore accounting team that supports the close.

This is a working manager role, not a pure oversight seat. You will prepare and review, close the books and explain them, and build the review structure that lets your offshore team take on more over time. It suits a licensed CPA who came up in public accounting and is now one or two years into managing people - someone ready to own a portfolio end to end at an operating company where the numbers tie directly to buildings, residents, and owners.

The position is onsite in Dallas five days per week, working alongside the accounting and asset management teams with regular exposure to senior leadership.

This position requires approximately 10%-20% travel and typically follows a 9:00 a.m.-6:00 p.m. schedule, with additional hours required as needed during closing periods.

What You'll Do

Team Leadership & Offshore Management
  • Directly manage two offshore accounting staff: set daily and monthly priorities, assign work, and hold the team to the close calendar.
  • Serve as the primary liaison between US leadership and the offshore team - you are accountable for their output, not just their activity.
  • Review offshore-prepared journal entries, reconciliations, schedules, and draft financials before anything reaches the Controller or ownership.
  • Structure work around limited time-zone overlap: clear written handoffs, defined turnaround expectations, and a daily or near-daily sync during close.
  • Build and maintain written SOPs, checklists, and close calendars so the process does not depend on any one person's memory.
  • Train and develop the team on senior living accounting specifics - census, care-level revenue, resident A/R - and on judgment, not just mechanics.
  • Conduct performance feedback, identify capability gaps, and recommend scope expansion or additional headcount as the portfolio grows.

Monthly Close & Financial Reporting
  • Own the full month-end close for an assigned portfolio of communities: journal entries, accruals, reclasses, prepaid and deferred revenue schedules, and intercompany entries.
  • Prepare and review accrual-basis financial statements - balance sheet, income statement, and cash flow - on a strict close calendar.
  • Own monthly income statement variance analysis (actual vs. budget vs. prior period vs. forecast) and write the narratives explaining the drivers.
  • Ensure all balance sheet accounts are reconciled monthly, including operating, security deposit, resident trust, and reserve accounts.
  • Review bank reconciliations and confirm reconciling items are researched and cleared.

Revenue, Census & Resident Billing
  • Ensure resident billing, rent rolls, census, and care-level revenue are accurate and complete before close.
  • Reconcile census and occupancy data to revenue recognized; drive discrepancies to resolution with community and clinical teams.
  • Account for community fees, move-in fees, and other deferred revenue in accordance with GAAP.
  • Oversee ancillary and third-party revenue streams (care levels, ancillary services, and where applicable Medicaid, Medicare, VA, or long-term care insurance receipts).
  • Monitor accounts receivable aging, bad debt reserves, and collections with the business office.

Cash, AP & Operations Support

Budgeting, Owner & Lender Reporting
  • Partner with Operations on the annual operating and capital budget process, including building schedules and stress-testing assumptions.
  • Own monthly and quarterly reporting packages for capital partners
  • Calculate and record management fees, asset management fees, and intercompany allocations.

Audit, Compliance & Process
  • Serve as a primary contact for external auditors and tax preparers; own PBC schedules, workpapers, and footnote support.
  • Maintain documentation and internal controls over cash, revenue, and disbursements - including controls appropriate to a distributed, offshore-supported team.
  • Identify and implement process improvements that shorten the close and improve reporting quality.

Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting (Accounting major required; Finance or business degrees without an accounting concentration will not be considered).
  • Active CPA license a plus.
  • 2+ years of public accounting experience a plus - audit or assurance in a CPA firm, ideally with real estate or senior living clients.
  • 1-2 years of experience as an Accounting Manager or in an equivalent role with direct review and supervisory responsibility.
  • 5+ years of total progressive accounting experience.
  • Strong working knowledge of US GAAP and accrual accounting.
  • Advanced Microsoft Excel - pivot tables, lookups, SUMIFS/index-match, large-data reconciliation, and building schedules from scratch without a template.
  • Demonstrated ownership of a full month-end close and multi-entity general ledgers.
  • Ability to work onsite in Dallas five days per week.

Preferred Qualifications
  • 3-5 years of real estate accounting experience, ideally in senior living, multifamily, or healthcare real estate.
  • Experience managing or working closely with an offshore, outsourced, or shared-services accounting team.
  • Hands-on experience with Yardi Voyager or Yardi Senior Living; MRI, RealPage/OneSite, PointClickCare (PCC), Sage Intacct, or NetSuite also valued.
  • Exposure to multi-entity or joint venture structures, consolidations, and equity waterfalls.
  • Working knowledge of ASC 606 and ASC 842.
  • Experience supporting a portfolio of 5+ properties or entities simultaneously.
  • Experience with agency or HUD-financed seniors housing assets.
  • Experience documenting processes or building SOPs from scratch.

Skills & Competencies

Technical
  • Full-cycle property accounting and multi-entity general ledger management
  • Financial statement preparation, review, and variance analysis
  • Balance sheet and bank reconciliation review
  • Budget development and forecasting support
  • Fixed assets, capital expenditures, and reserve accounting
  • Audit preparation and workpaper documentation
  • Property management and accounting ERP systems

Leadership
  • Reviews with a point of view - catches the error and explains why it happened
  • Delegates real work rather than defaulting to doing it personally under deadline
  • Communicates precisely in writing, which is how most offshore coordination actually happens
  • Builds repeatable process instead of relying on heroics each close
  • Gives direct, usable feedback across cultural and time-zone distance

Professional
  • Deadline discipline - hits close dates without being chased
  • Analytical judgment: finds the discrepancy, then explains what caused it
  • Clear communication with non-accountants, including community leadership, owners, lenders, and vendors
  • Self-directed problem solving; brings solutions, not just issues, to the Controller
  • High attention to detail without losing sight of materiality
  • Discretion with confidential resident, employee, and ownership information
  • Comfort in a mission-driven environment where financial decisions affect residents' daily lives
