Full Job Description
SUMMARY OF RESPONSIBILITIES

The Accountant is responsible for providing comprehensive financial support to the district, ensuring accurate and compliant management of accounting operations, budgeting, cash management, and financial reporting.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Accounting

  • Maintains student activity accounts. Acts as primary contact for school personnel responsible for student activities, accounting for questions, procedure clarifications, and assistance. Monitors student activity reports to ensure compliance with Minnesota Uniform Financial Accounting and Reporting Standards (UFARS).
  • Performs monthly close functions relating to the monthly and year-end close of the accounting system, including monthly chargebacks, balance sheet account reconciliations, and coordination with other departments.
  • Provides operational support to the Accounting, Purchasing, and Information Systems teams in the management and use of the accounting system, ensuring accurate data entry, assisting with system functions, and supporting effective collaboration across the Business Services team.
  • Supports the implementation of financial operational recommendations from the Accounting Manager by assisting with process improvements, monitoring workflow efficiency, and ensuring that changes align with district policies and best financial practices.
  • Oversee the accuracy and compliance of Accounts Payable and Receivable entries, verifying supporting documentation, confirming proper account coding, and ensuring adherence to all applicable district, state, and federal policies; identifies and resolves issues to ensure reliable and compliant financial processing.

Other

  • Develops and supports data conversion programs for gathering information more efficiently and accurately as it affects the finance system.
  • Assists in training and communication with other departments in the district as they relate to finance (e.g., report processing, reporting rules and standards, etc.).
  • Attend meetings and in-services as they apply to school business management to gather information on new developments.
  • Performs such other tasks and assumes such other responsibilities as assigned.

Budgeting

  • Prepares budget transfers for approval.
  • Assists sites and department managers in the analysis of their budget balances

Cash Management

  • Performs monthly bank reconciliations for all district accounts, ensuring deposits, withdrawals, and electronic transactions are accurately recorded, discrepancies are investigated and resolved promptly, and balances align with the district's accounting records.
  • Serve as the primary contact for the district's online payment, registration, and ticketing systems; ensure deposits are accurately recorded and reconciled, support schools in setting up, troubleshoot system issues, and monitor financial activity to ensure accuracy and compliance.
  • Maintains petty cash records and monitors compliance with district policies by schools and departments
  • Assists in the entry, analysis, and reporting on the Minnesota Education Grants System (MEGS)and reconciling to the district financial reporting systems.
  • Assists the Accounting Manager with reviewing, verifying, maintaining, and submitting 1099 activity.
  • Assures compliance with district record retention policies. Maintains all microfiche and other document storage for finance.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES

Supervises Accounting Office professionals. Responsible for the overall direction, coordination, and evaluation of this unit. Fulfill supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the district's policies and applicable laws. Responsibilities include interviewing, hiring, and training employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and discipling employees; and addressing complaints and resolving problems.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE

Requires a Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or Business Administration, and six months to one-year related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Salary: $85,569 to $103,538, DOQ, plus an excellent flex benefits package. View additional terms and benefits here.
