Job Title: Stopping the Violence Counsellor
Permanent, Full-time

Details of the Position: To provide counseling services to women, in accordance with the Stopping the Violence Program standards and Victoria Women's Transition House policy. Qualifications A degree in social work, counselling or a related field. A minimum of two years' experience, or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience is required. Individual and group counselling experience. Training and/or experience specifically related to feminist perspective counselling, violence against women in intimate relationships, Trauma Informed Practice.

Classification and Grid Stopping the Violence Counsellor, Paraprofessional Wage Grid, Level 14

Hours 35 hours per week
Monday - Friday
Exact working hours to be determined

Starting Pay Rate $42.47 per hour

Key Duties and Responsibilities: Counselling women, on an individual or group basis, who have experienced or who are currently experiencing violence or abuse in an intimate relationship. In person or by telephone, these services include:
• assessment of suitability of the service to the client's needs.
• crisis intervention
• individual and group counselling
• exploration of topics including social, cultural, familial and economic beliefs and values and how these may relate to
emotional health and wellness, as well as her experiences of intimate partner abuse.
• explorations of topics such as mental health and substance use and how these may relate to emotional and physical health/wellness as related to intimate partner abuse.
• increase women's awareness of the emotional and psychological impact on her and her children resulting from abusive or violent relationships.
• provision of resource information and referrals.
• program development and evaluation
• public presentations to promote the program to related services
• liaise with and make referrals to other local agencies as appropriate
• utilize agency resources regarding therapeutic issues, ethics, and professional accountability.
• maintain current records, statistics and documentation
• ensure a process for client evaluation
• ensure clients rights of privacy and confidentiality are maintained
  • implement child protection legislation as necessary

• maintain a current knowledge of issues related to violence against women in area of abuse in intimate relationships,
counselling techniques and current Child Protection legislation.
• attend staff, team meetings, in-services and approved staff development as related to the program.
• attend staff meetings.
• maintain current knowledge and comply with the Society's policies.
• maintain confidentiality of information gained as a result of the employment relationship.
Performs other related duties as required.

Ability to take initiative in programming and able to work in a self-directed manner.

Additional Information: This position is required to work in an environment with clients experiencing crisis or interpersonal situations. Support is often related to long-term impacts of physical, financial, verbal, sexual and
emotional abuse. Staff are often working on their own, on site.
