The United States Department of Labor (DOL) is a cabinet-level department of the U.S. federal government responsible for occupational safety, wage and hour standards, unemployment insurance benefits, re-employment services, and some economic statistics. The department was created in 1913 under President William Howard Taft and is headed by the United States Secretary of Labor. The DOL is responsible for enforcing more than 180 federal laws and thousands of federal regulations, including the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA), the Occupational Safety and Health Act (OSHA), and the Family and Medical Leave Act (FMLA). The department also administers several federal programs, including the Job Corps, the Veterans' Employment and Training Service (VETS), and the Office of Disability Employment Policy (ODEP).
