The Alberta Electric System Operator (AESO) is a not-for-profit organization responsible for the safe, reliable, and economic planning and operation of the Alberta interconnected electric system. The AESO was established in 2003 as an independent system operator (ISO) and is regulated by the Alberta Utilities Commission (AUC). The AESO's mandate includes ensuring the long-term adequacy of the province's electricity supply, facilitating the development of new transmission infrastructure, and promoting the integration of renewable energy sources. The AESO is funded by fees charged to market participants and is overseen by a board of directors appointed by the Alberta government.
