Full Job Description
What You'll Do:

The Yard Master is responsible for the coordination, supervision, and control of the yard operations, including rail movements, equipment positioning, and site activities, ensuring all activities are executed safely, efficiently, and in compliance with operational and safety requirements.

  • Act as the primary operational coordination point between yard crews, operations control, and construction teams.
  • Establish and manage daily operational priorities to ensure safe and efficient execution of yard activities.
  • Oversee movements required to support construction, maintenance, and third-party activities within the yard.
  • Ensure all yard activities comply with operating rules, site procedures, and safety requirements within a safety-critical rail environment.
  • Serve as the on-shift operational authority during emergencies, leading initial response actions in accordance with the Emergency Response Plan.
  • Coordinate and control yard access for construction personnel, contractors, vehicles, and deliveries.
  • Ensure off-rail activities (material handling, staging, loading/unloading) are safely integrated with rail operations.
  • Maintain operational awareness of yard conditions to prevent conflicts between rail and non-rail activities.
  • Document and support continuous operational and safety improvements within the yard environment.
  • Participate in special projects and initiatives as required.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.


What You Bring:
  • Minimum 2-5 years of experience in a railway, terminal, maintenance centre, or yard operations environment
  • High school diploma or general equivalency
  • Strong understanding of operational coordination and safety-critical environments.
  • Demonstrated ability to make timely, well-informed decisions under pressure.
  • Strong leadership and supervision skills with the ability to direct operational teams.
  • Clear and effective communication skills, including radio communications.
  • Strong organizational skills with attention to detail.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team.
  • Intermediate knowledge of MS Office (Outlook, Word, Excel).
  • Availability to work variable shifts, including nights, weekends, and holidays.


Expected compensation for this role is between $75,000.00-95,000.00 annually. Base salaries are determined according to multiple factors including skills, experience and potential impact on the role. Internal and external competitiveness are also taken into consideration. In addition to base salary ONxpress also offers a comprehensive medical and dental program, RRSP with company matching and the potential to participate in our discretionary, performance based bonus program.
