Miller Johnson is seeking a Workers' Compensation Attorney to join our Medical Recovery Practice Group in our Grand Rapids office. This is a unique opportunity to build a workers' compensation practice representing healthcare providers rather than employers or insurance carriers. Our team partners with hospitals and healthcare systems to recover medical payments, resolve reimbursement disputes, and navigate the complexities of Michigan's workers' compensation system.
The ideal candidate is a practical problem solver and strong advocate who enjoys litigation, client counseling, and developing creative strategies to maximize recoveries for healthcare providers. As an Attorney within our Medical Recovery Practice Group, you will:
- Manage a high-volume caseload of workers' compensation matters on behalf of hospitals, health systems, and other healthcare providers.
- Represent clients at workers' compensation hearings throughout West Michigan, including Grand Rapids, Kalamazoo, and Okemos.
- Advise healthcare providers on claim strategy, reimbursement issues, recovery efforts, and compliance with Michigan workers' compensation laws.
- Communicate with insurance carriers and adjusters regarding payment disputes, including preparing requests for reconsideration and negotiating claim resolution.
- Build strong relationships with clients, insurance companies, third-party administrators, and other stakeholders through responsive and practical legal counsel.
- Conduct legal research and prepare memoranda, correspondence, and other written analyses related to workers' compensation issues.
- Maintain organized case files, monitor deadlines, and manage case activity using legal technology and Microsoft Office tools.
- Collaborate with attorneys and legal professionals across the Medical Recovery Practice Group to develop effective litigation and recovery strategies while maintaining ownership of assigned matters.

Qualifications include:
- Juris Doctor from an ABA-accredited law school.
- Admission to the Michigan State Bar or eligibility for admission in Michigan.
- One to five years of legal experience preferred.
- Experience in workers' compensation, insurance defense, employment law, healthcare litigation, or other civil litigation preferred, but not required.
- Strong legal research, writing, analytical, and advocacy skills.
- Demonstrated ability to manage multiple matters and competing priorities in a fast-paced environment.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office, including Excel.
- Excellent communication, organization, and client relationship skills.
- A proactive, collaborative mindset with a willingness to take ownership of assigned matters.
- Ability to work primarily from the firm's Detroit office.
