Full Job Description
SMS is looking for a Welding Supervisor to oversee the safe, efficient, and economical operation of the assigned work area. Reporting to the Superintendent, this role leads tradespeople, apprentices, labourers, crane operations, and heavy lift activities involved in maintaining, repairing, and rebuilding heavy mining and construction equipment while supporting safe work practices, operational excellence, and employee development.

Work Location: Fort McMurray, AB.
Salary: $155,000 to $165,000 per annum.
Work Arrangement: Fixed on site - working from the branch each day.
Schedule: Monday to Friday, 8 hours per day.

What You'll Do

  • Lead daily welding shop operations to ensure work is completed safely, efficiently, and to quality standards.
  • Supervise tradespeople, apprentices, and labourers involved in the maintenance, repair, and rebuild of heavy mining and construction equipment.
  • Assign work, allocate resources, and monitor productivity to achieve operational targets and equipment availability.
  • Promote a strong safety culture through workplace inspections, FLRA reviews, incident investigations, safety meetings, and compliance with company and regulatory requirements.
  • Ensure employees are properly trained, qualified, and equipped to perform work safely and effectively.
  • Conduct quality inspections, support troubleshooting activities, and provide technical guidance to employees.
  • Oversee heavy lift activities, rigging operations, and hydraulic shovel component assembly and disassembly projects.
  • Coach, develop, and evaluate employees while supporting positive employee relations and performance improvement.
  • Communicate operational priorities and provide timely updates to employees, customers, and leadership teams.
  • Support branch operations through customer service, resource planning, and leadership coverage as required.


What You Bring
The successful candidate will bring a thorough knowledge of maintenance and repair of mining equipment along with journey-level certification in the welding trade. Candidates must hold a CWB Certification or meet the requirements to obtain certification.

Other requirements include:

  • Minimum 3 years of supervisory experience with demonstrated ability to oversee and coordinate tradespeople.
  • CWB Supervisor Training Course certificate.
  • Advanced Rigging Ticket is preferred.
  • Hydraulic shovel experience.
  • Large lift experience.
  • Experience supporting welding shop and crane operations.
  • Knowledge of OHSE legislation, regulations, and equipment inspection requirements.
  • Strong leadership, communication, coaching, and troubleshooting skills.
  • Basic computer skills.
  • Ability to lead teams of tradespeople, apprentices, and labourers in a safety-focused environment.
