Full Job Description
HDR has an excellent career opportunity in our NY/NJ Area for a professional to lead the development and growth of our Water Resource Management (WRM) Sector. The NY/NJ Water Resource Management Market Sector Lead (MSL) is a professional who is passionate about protecting water quality and the environment and is well-versed in the "One Water" concept and the inherent synergies between the stormwater, wastewater, recycled water, drinking water, and environmental markets. We are looking for someone who will work in a collaborative manner with local and national leadership to set the vision and strategy to expand and provide research, planning, design, and engineering services to our clients both within and related to the water resources market sector and relevant research organizations. The NY/NJ WRM MSL will report to the Area Water Business Development Manager and team with our Area Business Group Manager, Water Market Sector Client Managers, Project Managers, Business Class Leads, and technical staff to support WRM Market Sector business development and project delivery in the area. Primary Responsibilities - Primary responsibilities include advancing business development strategies, developing and pursuing new clients and projects, client management, project management for key projects, technical input on projects, and staff development. The selected candidate will have developed good writing, presenting, and speaking skills, as they will work directly with clients and staff. Responsibilities also include collaborating with other technical and marketing staff in the pursuit of new projects, taking a leadership role in selected key pursuits, and serving as client manager for key clients, providing leadership in addressing client issues and coordination of multiple projects. The specific responsibilities of this position are divided into WRM Marketing and Strategy, Staff Development, Operations Leadership, and Project Delivery. Water Resources Marketing and Strategy Responsibilities Include:
  • Develop and drive a long-range vision and strategy for HDR's NY/NJ Water Resources Market Sector disciplines including dams, levees, stormwater, ecosystem restoration, coastal, irrigation, and more.
  • Identity, develop, and implement Water Resources initiatives to the marketplace.
  • Collaborate with other technical and marketing staff in the pursuit of new projects, as well as taking a leadership role in selected key pursuits.
  • Work cooperatively with National Directors and marketing staff in local and national marketing and production efforts.
  • Lead HDR's Water Resources branding in the NY/NJ area by engaging in professional organizations aligned to the Water Resources market.
  • Develop relationships with industry counterparts in other consulting organizations.
  • In alignment and in support of our Client Managers, promote the Water Resources market and serve as a Client Manager for select agencies.
  • Participate in industry associations and serve as a company role-model in business and community organizations.
  • Develop relationships with industry counterparts in other consulting organizations.
  • Develop relationships with senior leadership in key client organizations.
Staff Development Responsibilities Include:
  • Work with area leadership to coordinate staffing/recruiting plans for key hires and assist leadership as necessary with technical or project management hires.
  • Identify technical gaps and support talent management and recruiting.
  • Manage and develop multidisciplinary teams.
  • Supervise senior engineers and Business Class Leaders.
  • Mentor staff and support the development of technical experts.
Operations Leadership Responsibilities Include:
  • Support project staffing and resourcing decisions, workload, and MS utilization.
  • Coordinate and collaborate about Market Sector services with Business Class Leaders in the Area.
  • Work with the Area Business Group Manager on development and delivery of Market Sector initiatives.
  • Collaborate on business class efforts with area operations, marketing, project managers, and project delivery staff.
Project Delivery Responsibilities Include:
  • Participate in delivery of project services through planning, design, and construction phases to meet client expectations, including project management.
  • Serve as Principal in Charge, Project Director, Project Manager, Technical Lead and/or Quality Manager on projects providing services that may include studies, planning, design, financial analysis, O&M, and alternative delivery.
  • Lead and support as necessary the development of and provide reviews of scopes of work, fee estimates, project risk identification and project schedules.
  • Assist with contract review on key projects to help ensure risk management, proper staffing, quality reviews and resolution of claims.
  • Ensure the best technology and solutions are integrated into project delivery.
  • Conduct quality assurance and quality control reviews where appropriate or assist technical teams in finding appropriate reviewers.
  • Participate in business class practice and professional discipline groups, project teams and activities to continually improve standards and best practices and implement effective quality assurance and quality control reviews.
Preferred Qualification
  • Strong communication and listening skills.
  • Ability to handle multiple assignments.
  • Good leadership and organizational skills.
  • Existing Municipal, State and Federal relationships to drive growth.
  • 10+ years water resources leadership experience including staff supervisory experience.
  • Professional Engineer licensed in NY, NJ, or ability to obtain license via reciprocity.
  • Preference given to local candidates
