The Vice President, Underwriting is responsible for executing underwriting, product, and distribution strategies within the Hospital/Complex Risk underwriting segment. This role brings advanced technical expertise, sound underwriting judgment, and strong market credibility to the organization. The VP Underwriter independently underwrites hospitals/health systems and other complex risks, manages key broker and customer relationships, and contributes expert insight to underwriting guidelines, coverage forms, pricing tools, and portfolio strategy.
Primary ResponsibilitiesUnderwriting & Technical Expertise- Independently underwrites complex and high-severity professional liability risks within granted authority and established guidelines.
- Evaluates risk characteristics, coverage structures, pricing, and terms to support profitable and sustainable growth.
- Provides technical input into underwriting guidelines, policy forms, endorsements, and rating tools.
- Reviews non-standard or escalated submissions and provides expert recommendations.
- Participates in claim reviews and applies claim learnings to underwriting decision-making.
Portfolio & Financial Performance- Maintains accountability for the performance of the assigned book of business.
- Reviews portfolio, rate, retention, and loss trends; identifies emerging risks or opportunities.
- Recommends underwriting actions or adjustments to appetite, terms, or pricing based on market and portfolio insight.
- Partners with underwriting leadership to support financial targets and portfolio objectives.
Distribution & Market Engagement- Develops and manages strong working relationships with key brokers, producers, and customers.
- Serves as a senior technical and market-facing representative of TDCSU.
- Supports new business development efforts through technical credibility, responsiveness, and consultative engagement.
- Participates in broker meetings, presentations, and market visits as needed.
Strategic & Organizational Contribution- Contributes underwriting expertise to product development, segment strategy, and planning efforts.
- Provides informed insight to underwriting leadership regarding market conditions, competition, and emerging trends.
- Collaborates cross-functionally with claims, operations, actuarial, and distribution partners to support underwriting outcomes.
- Promotes strong underwriting discipline and consistency across the organization.

- Serves as an informal mentor and technical resource to peers and junior underwriters.

QualificationsEducation- Bachelor's degree (BA or BS) or equivalent experience
Licenses / CertificationsExperience- Minimum of 10 years of underwriting experience in professional liability or related specialty lines
- Demonstrated experience underwriting complex risks with significant authority
Knowledge & Skills- Deep knowledge of professional liability products, coverage structures, and industry dynamics
- Strong underwriting judgment and analytical skills
- Effective relationship management and communication skills
- Ability to work independently and collaborate across functions
- Willingness and ability to travel as needed
