Reporting directly to the Senior Vice President and Chief Nursing Officer, the Vice President of Practice Excellence and Family-Centered Care is responsible for developing and executing an enterprise-wide strategy that advances high-quality, evidence-based pediatric care, family-centered services, and professional nursing practice excellence.

The VP of Practice Excellence and Family-Centered Care provides strategic executive oversight for Community and Academic Partnerships, Practice Transition and Professional Development, Research and Innovation, Professional Practice and Outcomes, Child Life and Integrative Services, and Family Services to advance safe, reliable, world-class pediatric care aligned with Magnet standards, national benchmarks, and the organization's mission.

This role provides executive oversight for budgeting, operations, and strategic initiatives that advance nursing practice excellence and family-centered care. The VP leads enterprise-wide strategies to strengthen quality, safety, regulatory readiness, professional development, and measurable clinical and organizational outcomes while fostering collaboration, innovation, accountability, and continuous learning.

Minimum Education -
  • Master's Degree (Required)
  • BSN (Required)
  • Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP), PhD, DHA, EdD, or other doctoral degree (Preferred)


Minimum Work Experience -
  • 15 years Nursing experience to include at least 10 years of clinical and professional practice (Required)
  • 5 years of progressive leadership experience (Required)


Required Skills/Knowledge -
  • Experience teaching, mentoring, and developing curricula.
  • Knowledge of nursing practice and family-centered care principles.
  • Experience leading Magnet program initiatives, standards, and regulatory survey preparation.
  • Experience leading multidisciplinary teams.
  • Demonstrated leadership in nursing quality, patient safety, clinical outcomes, financial acumen, and clinical information systems.
  • Knowledge of evidence-based practices that improve patient care, clinical standards, and staffing outcomes.
  • Ability to apply research findings to establish organizational standards, practices, and patient care models.
  • Experience leading quality improvement initiatives that enhance clinical practices, nursing education, quality, research, family engagement, care delivery, and patient-centered outcomes.
  • Experience promoting systemness, seamless coordination, and responsible stewardship.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

Functional Accountabilities:

Nursing Excellence Professional Practice

  • Provide executive leadership for Children's National Magnet journey, including strategy, execution, designation, and sustained excellence.
  • Oversight of Magnet initiatives for alignment purposes with Joint Commission standards, CMS, state regulations, pediatric safety standards, and empirical outcome expectations.
  • Establish and execute long-range strategies that advance professional practice, clinical standards, and evidence-based pediatric care.
  • Embed high-reliability principles across nursing practice initiatives to strengthen safety, consistency, quality, and accountability.
  • Lead enterprise-level analyses of targeted nursing programs to drive measurable improvements in clinical practice, professional engagement, nursing outcomes, and scholarship.


Workforce Strategy & Optimization

  • Lead workforce strategy across the five Strategic Service Lines; optimize workforce planning and organizational capability.
  • Design a unified strategic framework that integrates clinical practice, education, research, quality, safety, and family services into a cohesive system of excellence.
  • Oversee implementation of enterprise-wide programs and initiatives that improve patient safety, quality, and nurse-sensitive outcomes based on pediatric benchmarks.
  • Design strategies that embed high-reliability behaviors, structures, and processes into nursing practice and care delivery.
  • Develop and lead strategic initiatives that modernize care delivery, expand simulation capabilities, enhance informatics integration and transformation.
  • Develop strategies based on performance trends, emerging needs, and environmental changes.


Strategic Leadership

  • Develop and execute the Nursing & Integrative Care strategic vision, strategic plan, and enterprise priorities.
  • Lead organizational change initiatives that strengthen practice, education, quality, and family-centered care.
  • Champion a culture of excellence, psychological safety, and continuous learning.
  • Lead cultural transformation to strengthen engagement, empowerment, and shared governance.
  • Mentor, coach, and develop directors, managers, and emerging leaders to support talent readiness and succession planning.
  • Advance framework to ensure accountability, strategic thinking, and high-reliability behaviors are modeled across Nursing & Integrative Care.
  • Drive effective partnerships that strengthen workforce pipelines, research opportunities, and community engagement.
  • Develop strong relationships with medical staff, executive leadership, operational leaders, academic institutions, community organizations, and national pediatric networks.
  • Drive interdisciplinary collaboration to support exemplary practice and integrated care delivery.


Organizational Transformation

  • Design and implement the future-state organizational model; integrate service lines; drive change management.
  • Provide executive leadership and accountability for enterprise-wide organizational transformation initiatives that align nursing practice, family-centered care, workforce strategy, quality, safety, innovation, and operational priorities.
  • Lead change management efforts to redesign structures, workflows, care delivery models, and leadership practices to support sustainable excellence and system-level performance improvement.
  • Partner with executive, clinical, operational, academic, and community leaders to advance transformation strategies that improve engagement, standardization, access, efficiency, patient and family experience, and clinical outcomes.
  • Develop transformation goals, governance structures, performance metrics, and accountability systems to monitor progress, remove barriers, and ensure initiatives deliver measurable organizational value.


Professional Practice Strategy

  • Provide executive leadership for the enterprise professional practice strategy, ensuring alignment with organizational priorities, Magnet standards, regulatory requirements, and pediatric care excellence.
  • Advance the professional practice framework, governance model, standards of practice, and nursing excellence strategy.
  • Advance professional nursing practice by integrating evidence-based practice, research, quality outcomes, workforce development, innovation, and patient- and family-centered care into the professional practice model.
  • Evaluate professional practice outcomes, identify system-level gaps and opportunities, and lead improvements that strengthen nursing excellence, clinical consistency, engagement, accountability, and care delivery outcomes.


Research, Innovation & Scholarship

  • Champion nursing science, evidence-based practice, innovation, and dissemination.
  • Provide executive direction for research governance, innovation priorities, scholarly infrastructure, and dissemination expectations across Nursing and Family-Centered Care.
  • Cultivate strategic academic, clinical, interprofessional, and external partnerships to expand research capacity, accelerate innovation pathways, secure grant opportunities, advance scholarly dissemination, and strengthen national recognition.
  • Champion an enterprise culture of inquiry by enabling nurses and interdisciplinary partners to translate evidence into practice, evaluate innovative care models, and disseminate outcomes that advance pediatric nursing excellence.
  • Provide executive oversight of research, innovation, and scholarship outcomes, including participation, dissemination, funding, implementation impact, and alignment with Magnet empirical outcomes and organizational priorities.


Strategic Partnerships & Philanthropy

  • Develop academic, community, professional, and philanthropic partnerships; collaborate with the Foundation to advance Nursing and Integrative Care priorities.
  • Collaborate with the Foundation, executive leadership, clinical leaders, and operational stakeholders to identify funding priorities, develop compelling cases for support, and align donor investments with organizational strategy.
  • Integrate philanthropic initiatives with program planning, performance goals, stewardship expectations, and measurable outcomes to demonstrate impact for patients, families, nurses, and the organization.


Financial Stewardship

  • Lead portfolio budgeting, resource allocation, business planning, and strategic investment decisions.
  • Oversee operating and capital budgets, staffing investments, contracts, philanthropic funds, and program resources to support sustainable service delivery and organizational performance.
  • Evaluate financial performance, productivity, return on investment, and resource utilization to identify efficiencies, mitigate risks, and guide executive decision-making.
  • Collaborate with finance, operations, Foundation, and clinical leaders to develop business plans, funding strategies, and investment recommendations that advance nursing excellence and family-centered care.


Executive Communications & Strategic Engagement

  • Provide executive direction for Nursing communications, brand strategy, social media presence, executive messaging, annual reports, recognition strategy, and alignment with Marketing & Communications.
  • Cultivate executive, clinical, operational, academic, community, and family partnerships to align priorities, strengthen collaboration, and accelerate organizational transformation.
  • Establish communication governance, engagement strategies, and feedback systems that advance transparency, alignment, accountability, and trust across the organization.
  • Develop executive expectations for quality, safety, evidence-based practice, and regulatory communication to guide directors, managers, and frontline teams.


Quality Improvement & Outcomes

  • Develop enterprise quality strategy across nursing divisions, embedding QI into practice, leadership expectations, and performance goals.
  • Oversee nurse-sensitive outcomes, including CLABSI, CAUTI, falls, pressure injuries, pain management, and patient experience.
  • Evaluate NSI performance against pediatric benchmarks and Magnet empirical outcome requirements.
  • Identify system risks and opportunities to guide strategic planning, resource allocation, and operational priorities.
  • Drive measurable improvements in safety, quality, and outcomes through disciplined QI methodologies.
  • Govern safety and quality performance through dashboards, scorecards, and executive reporting.
  • Lead enterprise evaluation of nursing practice through audits, peer review, competency assessments, and outcome analysis.


Executive Representation & External Relations
  • Represent Nursing and Integrative Care with executive leadership, the Board, professional organizations, academic institutions, community partners, and national forums.


Family-Centered Care
  • Provide executive oversight for Family-Centered Care programs and services that support holistic, developmentally appropriate pediatric care.
  • Govern operations, staffing, and resources to ensure reliable service access and performance.
  • Expand access to holistic, therapeutic, and integrative services that enhance the patient and family experience.
  • Design and advance integrative and psychosocial strategies to support holistic healing and therapeutic modalities.


The disclosed salary range includes the minimum and maximum rates within which Children's National believes an individual's base pay rate will fall for this position. It is not typical for an individual to be hired at or near the maximum of the pay range. The exact pay rate for this position will be based on a variety of factors in alignment with the Children's National compensation philosophy. These factors are legitimate and non-discriminatory including, but not limited to, the current market conditions; organizational needs; the individual's combination of prior work experience, level of education, knowledge, skills, and other qualifications. Children's National is committed to providing a fair and competitive total rewards package to each of our employees. This base salary range does not include our comprehensive benefits package or any additional compensation for which this position may be eligible.
