Job Description:The VP Law, Heart Recovery (Abiomed) group, will primarily manage legal matters for the Heart Recovery businesses. It is among the fastest growing in J&J Med Tech. This position also supports V-Wave and other potential cardiovascular acquired companies and products. This position will report directly to the VP, Law Cardiovascular of the MedTech Sector of J&J. This individual will sit on the business unit leadership teams of Heart Recovery and will advise senior management on general legal matters and recent changes in laws and regulations and be primarily responsible for Global Legal Organization's (GLO) alignment with these businesses and leadership team.
The position will be located on-site at the Headquarters in Danvers, Massachusetts.
This position is responsible for providing business partners with strategic legal advice, support and counsel in all areas of law, to further the interests of the business while protecting the company's rights, interests and reputation.
Responsibilities include: Member of the business unit leadership team; responsible for coordinating legal matters for the business; partnering with business clients, colleagues in the GLO and outside counsel, as appropriate, to support business opportunities while ensuring compliance with legislation, regulations, industry guidelines and internal policies; providing strategic proactive and reactive legal advice on a wide range of proposed business initiatives and materials, in the areas of research and development, sales and marketing, regulatory affairs, health care compliance and laws, privacy, distribution, pricing and reimbursement, clinical, product liability, employment and labor issues, technology, acquisitions and licensing, and general corporate issues.
The successful candidate will also be responsible for preparing and negotiating complex commercial agreements across functional areas listed above, including development, sales, distribution, consulting, licensing, promotion, co-marketing, data use and data rights; assisting in litigation and investigations and managing outside counsel relationships, work flow and budget; training, educating and advising business partners on key legal topics and leading and serving on project teams and committees to assess and implement special/significant projects in each business, leadership team and/or the GLO. There will also be close partnership with the GLO team responsible for Supply Agreements for Med Tech.
The position will also have responsibility for legal support for the V-Wave business. This team supports contracting and provides strategic legal advice to V-Wave's commercial and R&D teams. The V-Wave legal team will report into the position.
The position will also liaise with attorneys within MedTech and GLO and will coordinate with counsel outside of the United States advising the businesses on regional issues. Counsel will collaborate with and build strong relationships with functional lawyers for regulatory, intellectual property, trademark, privacy, digital technology, tax and other specialists in the GLO as well as colleagues and business partners across Johnson & Johnson and serve as a member of cross-functional business teams.
Counsel in this role will further business goals while protecting the company's rights, interests, and reputation and ensuring compliance with laws and regulations, industry guidelines and internal policies.
A team of lawyers and other GLO professionals report into this role.
EXPERIENCE AND DEMONSTRATED SKILLS:
- J.D. or equivalent legal degree and admission to a US bar or equivalent outside of the US bar is required.
- 10+ years of experience in private practice and/or in-house, preferably with significant experience in the healthcare industry (medical device sector preferred); strength in corporate/commercial matters.
- Knowledge of medical device businesses (products, procedures, business model and industry trends) and experience advising on applicable healthcare, privacy and medical device laws and regulations, including one or more of the following: False Claims Act, Anti-Kickback Statute, Stark Law, HIPAA/GDPR and the Food, Drug and Cosmetics Act preferred, or proven interest and ability to develop understanding; proven legal and business judgment with an orientation to finding solutions.
- Excellent strategic and analytical skills; experience researching legal principles and precedents.
- Desire to work in a fast-paced environment, meet stringent timelines, and handle multiple demands simultaneously.
- Ability to work both independently and as a team player.
- Excellent client relationship, communication and leadership skills and the ability to work with wide range of people with varying degrees of legal exposure.
- Ability to manage ambiguity inherent in emerging areas and to lead innovative problem-solving to address new business challenges in a highly competitive market.
- Experience in training, educating and advising business partners on key legal topics required.
- Strong results-oriented and strategic thinking abilities required.
- Demonstrated willingness to listen and learn and proven ability to make and respectfully explain proper decisions (even when this leads to tough business discussions) required.
- Ability to receive specific directions from more senior law professionals and provide guidance to professional staff in developing solutions to problems presented.
- Proven ability to provide outstanding legal services to, and interact with, a range of senior executives and strong interpersonal skills and excellent track record of collaboration with colleagues required.
- Some travel is required to support business.

The anticipated base pay range for this position is :$178,000.00 - $307,050.00

Vacation -120 hours per calendar year
