Full Job Description
Office Location: Tempe, AZ or Dallas, TX

Job Summary: Responsible for assisting management in the general business operations of the company by leading the establishment and maintenance of best in class preconstruction services (to include processes, procedures, best practices, and mentoring/development/training of Preconstruction/Estimating staff) across the company, seeking ways to increase client satisfaction, improve efficiency and productivity, and increase profitability. In addition, the Vice President of Preconstruction will directly manage the Preconstruction department for assigned office(s) and assist with business development.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities will include:
• Use discretion and independent judgment and professional skills to perform daily duties and to resolve issues in order to minimize risk to the company.
• Serve on the management team and be the liaison and subject matter expert for Preconstruction.
• Implement the Company's goals and protocols for preconstruction operations and partner in the planning and development of department strategies that align with the Company's goals.
• In coordination with VP/GMs and SVP/RMs, establish and communicate short and long-term goals and objectives for the Preconstruction department and assist in national alignment to deliver high quality, end-to-end preconstruction services across multiple projects, offices, and markets.
• Take steps to anticipate short-term and long-term future consequences and trends, using knowledge and perspective.
• Develop and implement preconstruction standards and procedures.
• Develop standards to manage the design process (specifically the design team, budget and client through the development of permit documents).
• Make recommendations for ways to improve business operations (including processes, procedures and best operating practices), looking for ways to increase client satisfaction, improve efficiency and improve profitability.
• Identify and qualify subcontractors for their ability to perform on a national basis and maintain associated database.
• Solicit, negotiate and manage national purchasing agreements with vendors, suppliers and subcontractors to provide a competitive advantage.
• Work with business unit management to identify staff development needs and participate in recruiting process and make hiring recommendations as requested.
• Onboard, mentor, develop and train Preconstruction staff as requested by business unit management.
• Develop and encourage professional growth in others.
Local Leadership - Provide leadership and supervision for assigned office(s) to ensure all Preconstruction team members are providing a high level of performance and service in responsibilities such as:
• Development of thorough, accurate and competitive cost estimates through all phases of design.
• Development and maintenance of systems to track historical cost analysis from completed projects that improve the consistency, effectiveness and efficiency of preconstruction services.
• Providing design assistance and cost data regarding project feasibility to clients.
• Coordinating with the preconstruction and project teams to provide constructability reviews during all phases of design and produce and maintain detailed preconstruction schedules from schematic design phase to construction phase.
• Ensuring that all projects hold a preconstruction-PM transition meeting to assist in the proper turnover to Operations team.
• Ensuring adherence to subcontractor prequalification requirements prior to the award of any subcontract.
• Managing the timely processing of all subcontracts through the project management system, and work with VP/GMs and SVP/RMs to address and resolve subcontractor contract comments.
Business Development/Sales - Working with the regional business units' management team and Business Development:
• Develop a comprehensive understanding of the Company's services to assist in identifying applicable potential new clients and projects.
• Develop and maintain strong working relationships with prospective and current clients, architects, engineers and subcontractors.
• Participate in interviews and presentations with potential clients, to provide technical expertise and advice during the entire timeline from opportunity, to pursuit, and execution of the projects.
• Research and analyze the marketplace for pertinent strategic opportunities and recommend strategies that result in winning profitable new business.
• Identify new work opportunities and advise Business Development, VP/GM and SVP/RM of potential projects with existing and new clients and lead or participate in the pursuit of project leads.
Marketing:
• Coordinate with Marketing to develop and maintain consistent proposal documents.
• Assist in developing and facilitating professional and competitive proposals and presentations, including assistance with business development.
• Work with VP/GMs and SVP/RMs to assist in the execution of their respective marketing plans.
• Research market trends and competitors marketing material to ensure our message is concise and clear.
• Recommend strategies that result in generating new opportunities through our social media avenues.
This position will also require performance of the following duties:
• Provide assistance and evaluations to Risk Management and the VP/GM regarding potential contract, cost, construction feasibility, and insurance risks.
• Organize and lead monthly Preconstruction conference calls and annual Preconstruction conference.
• Lead or participate in other applicable meetings, presentations, and forums.
• Escalate concerns to VP/GMs and SVP/RMs as appropriate.
• Other duties as assigned.

Education, Experience, and Licensing/Certifications include:
• Degree in Construction Management, Engineering, Architecture, or related field.
• Minimum of 15 years of experience successfully estimating (conceptual and hard bid) construction projects for a general contractor.
• An equivalent combination of education and experience will be considered.
• Proven track record of effectively managing others.
• Design-build experience on relevant project types.
• Experience in value-engineering.
• Valid State-issued driver's license and vehicle insurance which meets Alston Construction liability coverage requirements and satisfactory driving record.
• OSHA 10-hour Certification.
• First Aid/CPR Certification.
