Full Job Description
You'll enjoy the flexibility to work remotely * from anywhere within the U.S. as you take on some tough challenges.

For all hires in the Minneapolis or Washington, D.C. area, you will be required to work in the office a minimum of four days per week.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Sell Optum Whole Health Solutions (WHS) to new and/or existing clients in the payer market, with accountability for growth across an assigned geography, market, or portfolio of health plan relationships
  • Assume responsibility and accountability for assigned annual sales revenue goals and maintain a robust, qualified new business pipeline
  • Develop market-level growth strategies that connect payer priorities, local market dynamics, competitive activity, and Optum capabilities
  • Lead executive discovery and opportunity development across the WHS portfolio, including Behavioral Health, One Pass fitness, musculoskeletal, transplant and complex care, oncology, maternity, fertility, NICU, NurseLine, focused claims review, and strategic partnerships
  • Identify whitespace, mobilize the appropriate solution sales and clinical experts, and orchestrate a coordinated Optum value story for each client
  • Own and lead the sales process and client engagement through close, coordinating with legal, pricing, finance, product, clinical, implementation, and account teams
  • Display exceptional strategic selling skills including discovery, ROI development and presentation, sales cycle management, territory planning, negotiation, and closing
  • Cultivate and deepen C-suite and complex client relationships, engaging Optum executives when appropriate
  • Develop consultative relationships and serve as a trusted advisor by connecting Optum solutions to the client's growth, affordability, quality, access, and member experience objectives
  • Maintain current knowledge of assigned markets, payer strategies, procurement cycles, local provider dynamics, and competitor positioning
  • Manage the sales cycle through disciplined weekly pipeline and account reviews with all stakeholders
  • Communicate and present effectively to multiple audiences and levels
  • Participate in trade shows and industry events, provide market intelligence and product feedback, and represent WHS as a positive enterprise leader
  • Ensure accurate and timely entry of sales opportunity information using the CRM tool
  • Work independently as a solid team player with minimal supervision in a fast-paced, high-intensity environment

Required Qualifications:

  • 7+ years of sales and/or business development experience selling complex health care solutions to payers, including significant experience in assigned regional or national markets
  • Demonstrated market development experience, including territory strategy, executive relationship building, competitive positioning, and creation of new pipelines
  • Proven successful record of developing and closing complex payer deals and consistently achieving annual sales targets of $25M or more
  • Proven ability to partner effectively with health plans and navigate complex, matrixed organizations
  • Proven solid presentation skills across face-to-face, webinar, and phone-based client interactions
  • Proven client-focused orientation that balances client objectives with enterprise priorities
  • Proven superior written, oral, and interpersonal communication skills
  • Demonstrated consultative approach and solid team orientation
  • Willingness and ability to travel a minimum of 25% regularly and during peak review season potentially up to 50%


Preferred Qualifications:

  • 12+ years of payer sales or business development experience with an established record of opening markets and expanding enterprise relationships
  • Experience in clinical practice, utilization management, care management, specialty networks and/or complex condition programs
  • Experience with digital tools, or related clinical solutions
  • Health plan experience with a national, regional, or local organizations
  • Deep knowledge of payer economics, clinical programs, benefit design, and Medicare Advantage
  • Proven solid professional reputation within the health care industry and access to senior payer decision makers

Pay is based on several factors including but not limited to local labor markets, education, work experience, certifications, etc. In addition to your salary, we offer benefits such as, a comprehensive benefits package, incentive and recognition programs, equity stock purchase and 401k contribution (all benefits are subject to eligibility requirements). No matter where or when you begin a career with us, you'll find a far-reaching choice of benefits and incentives. The salary for this role will range from $75,000 - $160,000 annually based on full-time employment. This role is also eligible to receive bonuses based on sales performance. We comply with all minimum wage laws as applicable.
