Full Job Description
The Opportunity

Spiniello is seeking an accomplished construction executive to lead one of the company's most strategically important business units.

This is a rare opportunity to assume full leadership responsibility for an established and growing business unit supported by an experienced team, significant backlog, strong client relationships, and expanding alternative delivery opportunities.

The successful candidate will have the opportunity to influence strategy, drive growth, develop talent, strengthen key client relationships, and help shape the future direction of the business.

Reporting directly to executive leadership, this individual will be responsible for the overall performance of the Washington DC Business Unit, including operations, business development, client engagement, talent development, financial performance, and strategic growth initiatives.

Unlike many large construction organizations where operational leaders have limited influence over broader business decisions, this role offers meaningful autonomy, decision-making authority, and direct responsibility for business performance.

Who This Role Is Designed For

This role is designed for a high-performing construction executive who has successfully led major projects, programs, or operations and is ready for broader business leadership responsibility.

The ideal candidate may currently be operating within a large construction, engineering, infrastructure, or design-build organization and seeking an opportunity to move beyond project leadership into a role with greater influence over strategy, talent development, operations, client engagement, and business performance.

This position provides the opportunity to lead a business unit rather than simply manage projects.

Established Platform for Success

The successful candidate will step into a well-established operation supported by experienced Project Managers, Project Engineers, Preconstruction professionals, Safety personnel, regional support staff, and executive leadership.

The business already benefits from a significant and growing backlog, strong client relationships, proven project delivery capabilities, and an active pipeline of future opportunities.

The Washington, DC market represents one of the company's most important strategic growth initiatives and offers significant opportunities across water, wastewater, utility, rehabilitation, and alternative delivery programs.

This role is not about building from the ground up. It is about leveraging an already successful platform and helping take it to the next level.

Key Responsibilities

Business Unit & P&L Leadership

  • Lead the overall performance of the Washington, DC Business Unit.
  • Maintain full responsibility for business unit financial performance, including revenue growth, profitability, forecasting, budgeting, and resource planning.
  • Develop and execute strategic business plans that support long-term growth objectives.
  • Establish business unit priorities aligned with company objectives and market opportunities.
  • Partner with executive leadership to establish and achieve short- and long-term business goals.

Operational Leadership

  • Provide leadership and oversight for Project Executives, Project Managers, Project Engineers, Superintendents, and support personnel.
  • Ensure projects are delivered safely, on schedule, within budget, and to the highest quality standards.
  • Promote best practices in project delivery, risk management, and operational execution.
  • Drive a culture of accountability, collaboration, innovation, and continuous improvement.

Alternative Delivery & Market Development

  • Expand Spiniello's presence in CMAR, Progressive Design-Build, Design-Build, and other collaborative delivery models.
  • Lead major pursuits, interviews, preconstruction efforts, and strategic growth initiatives.
  • Develop and maintain executive-level relationships with clients, public agencies, utilities, engineering firms, and key industry stakeholders.
  • Represent Spiniello throughout the market and strengthen the company's position as a preferred infrastructure partner.

Leadership & Talent Development

  • Recruit, mentor, and develop high-performing professionals.
  • Support succession planning and leadership development initiatives.
  • Foster a culture focused on safety, accountability, professional growth, and employee engagement.
  • Build a scalable leadership structure capable of supporting continued growth.

Qualifications

Required

  • 15+ years of progressive construction leadership experience.
  • Proven leadership experience in a senior operations, regional leadership, or business unit leadership role.
  • Experience managing large infrastructure, utility, water, wastewater, heavy civil, transportation, or complex construction programs.
  • Demonstrated success leading large operational teams and project portfolios.
  • Strong financial acumen and experience with budgeting, forecasting, operational planning, and P&L management.
  • Strong business development capabilities and a track record of building client relationships and winning work.
  • Excellent communication, negotiation, and leadership skills.

Preferred

  • Experience with CMAR, Progressive Design-Build, Design-Build, or Alternative Delivery projects.
  • Existing relationships with DC Water, WSSC, regional utilities, municipalities, engineering firms, and key infrastructure stakeholders.
  • Experience leading major pursuits and project interviews.
  • Bachelor's Degree in Engineering, Construction Management, Business, or a related field.
  • MBA considered a plus.

Compensation & Executive Benefits

Compensation will be commensurate with experience, leadership background, market relationships, operational expertise, and demonstrated success leading large-scale construction operations.

Performance Incentive Compensation

In addition to base salary, the successful candidate will be eligible for performance-based incentive compensation tied to business performance and strategic objectives.

The position includes a comprehensive executive benefits package, including:

Why This Opportunity Is Different

Most construction organizations offer opportunities to manage projects.

Few offer the opportunity to lead a business.

At Spiniello, you will step into a strong, dedicated team with a substantial backlog, established client relationships, and the resources needed to succeed.

You will have the opportunity to influence strategy, build teams, strengthen market position, expand alternative delivery capabilities, and play a meaningful role in shaping the future of one of the company's most important growth markets.

For the right leader, this represents a rare opportunity to combine executive leadership, P&L ownership, entrepreneurial freedom, and long-term career growth within a company committed to investing in its people and future.

In addition to leading one of the company's most strategically important business units, the successful candidate will have the opportunity to grow alongside the organization.

Spiniello is committed to developing and promoting strong leaders, and future advancement opportunities may exist for individuals who demonstrate exceptional leadership, business performance, and the ability to drive sustained growth.

For the right candidate, this position can serve as a platform for broader leadership responsibilities and increased influence within the organization over time.

Built by People. Driven by Purpose.
