Job Summary:

The VP of Clinical Excellence & Patient Safety defines, measures, and continuously improves quality of care across the enterprise. This role sets evidence-based clinical standards and care plans, advances a culture of safety, owns medical data and informatics, and ensures clinical insight drives measurable improvement at the hospital level. The role also sets referral standards across the GP and specialty continuum and advances access to care. Reporting to the CMO, the role leads patient safety/risk, clinical standards/compliance, and informatics teams and partners closely with Growth, Field & Medical Operations, Science, Clinical L&D, and Nursing.

Essential Job Responsibilities:
  • Own enterprise patient safety reporting and incident response protocols across all business units
  • Lead risk management, near-miss tracking, and root cause analysis at hospital and enterprise levels
  • Develop and govern evidence-based clinical standards, review cycles, and version control across care environments
  • Develop and govern enterprise care plans that translate clinical standards into consistent, repeatable care delivery
  • Set referral standards and communication expectations across the GP and specialty continuum
  • Advance access-to-care initiatives that expand the availability of quality medicine across the network
  • Monitor standards adherence and coordinate interventions with Medical Operations and Clinical L&D
  • Own medical data and informatics, including the enterprise clinical KPI framework and quality dashboards, in partnership with Enterprise Insights
  • Drive cross-functional quality initiatives with Science, Nursing, and Clinical L&D to improve outcomes
  • Represent the organization externally on clinical excellence and patient safety

Key Deliverables/Outcomes:
  • Enterprise patient safety governance and peer review model operating at local and enterprise levels
  • Standardized, evidence-based clinical standards and compliance process active across all business units
  • Clinical KPI dashboard suite implemented with clear reporting cadence and accountability
  • Priority clinical quality and safety interventions deployed in underperforming hospitals
  • Enterprise care plan library developed and adopted across priority clinical areas
  • Referral standards and access-to-care clinical initiatives defined and implemented across the GP and specialty continuum
  • Demonstrable improvement in network-level patient outcomes and safety event management

Success Metrics/KPIs:
  • Reduction in preventable adverse events and repeat safety incidents across the network
  • Improvement in adherence rates to enterprise clinical standards
  • Timeliness and closure rates for incident investigations and root cause action plans
  • Improvement in core outcome measures (for example, survival to discharge and readmission trends)
  • Adoption and impact of targeted quality improvement interventions
  • Adoption of enterprise care plans, adherence to referral standards, and progress on access-to-care measures

Key Internal and External Stakeholders:
  • Internal: CMO, Medical Operations, Science, Clinical L&D, Nursing, Enterprise Insights, Legal, hospital medical leaders.
  • External: industry forums, professional associations, quality and patient safety partners.

Required Experience:
  • 8+ years of veterinary leadership experience including clinical standard development and implementation
  • Experience building KPI frameworks, quality improvement programs, and patient safety systems at scale
  • Proven ability to lead and develop teams with direct reports across multiple functional areas
  • Strong working knowledge of evidence-based medicine and clinical standard-setting processes
  • Strong communication skills, oral and written, with the ability to present to executive and clinical audiences
  • Record of externalization and involvement in organized veterinary medicine, including publications and conference presentations, preferred

Education / Certifications / Licensing:
  • Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) degree required
  • Advanced board certification strongly preferred


Physical Demands of the Job:

Primarily sedentary work performed in an office or remote environment; may require occasional travel and prolonged periods of sitting, use of a computer, and standard office equipment.

FLSA Classification: Exempt

The base salary range for this full-time position is $250,000-$300,000 annually. Our salary ranges are primarily determined by role, level, and location. The range provided for each job posting reflects the minimum and maximum target salaries for the position across all US locations. Within the range, individual pay is determined by work location and additional factors, including job-related skills, experience, and relevant education or training.
