Full Job Description
The VP, Chief Underwriter leads Medical Mutual's enterprise underwriting strategy, governance, and pricing discipline. This role establishes underwriting policies, risk-selection standards, and decision frameworks that promote rate adequacy, portfolio profitability, regulatory compliance, and alignment with acceptable risk levels. The VP partners with Actuarial, Finance, Sales, Product, Compliance, and business leaders to support profitable growth, market competitiveness, and sustainable financial performance.

Responsibilities:
  • Provides executive leadership for MMO's underwriting strategy, policies, standards, and decision. Establishes underwriting principles, authority levels, risk-selection guidelines, and governance practices that support profitable growth, financial strength, regulatory compliance, and consistent with acceptable risk levels.
  • Leads underwriting's role in rate adequacy, pricing discipline, medical cost trend evaluation, MLR performance, and portfolio profitability. Partners with Actuarial, Finance, Product, Sales, and business leaders to monitor experience, identify emerging risk, evaluate corrective actions, and ensure pricing and underwriting decisions support sustainable financial performance.
  • Serves as a strategic partner to commercial, individual, stop-loss, and related product teams to support market competitiveness, profitable membership growth, product modernization, broker/employer value, and territory or segment expansion. Evaluates underwriting implications of product design, funding arrangements, network strategies, distribution opportunities, and competitive market dynamics.
  • Directs underwriting and rating practices to ensure consistent application of policies, compliance with applicable state and federal requirements, and adherence to MMO's contract, filing, audit, and control expectations. Supports regulatory readiness by maintaining sound documentation, defensible underwriting practices, and effective coordination with Compliance, Legal, Actuarial, Finance, and Product.
  • Leads underwriting teams by setting priorities, clarifying decision rights, developing talent, and ensuring effective execution of underwriting responsibilities. Drives continuous improvement through data, analytics, automation, process simplification, and cross-functional collaboration to improve speed, consistency, quality, and strategic value delivered by the underwriting function.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

Education and Experience:
  • Master's Degree in Accounting, Actuarial, Finance, Business, Math, Systems or related field or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • 12 years progressive experience in group health underwriting techniques, 8 years which are in a managerial/leadership capacity.
