The person in this position will primarily be responsible for providing advice and counsel on a wide variety of traditional labor issues that arise from the day-to-day operations of a growing, complex public company operating in a heavily regulated environment. This person will be part of a cross-functional team that focuses on creating new strategies to support our teammates and drive efficiencies while ensuring that DaVita leads the way in being the Partner and Employer of Choice.

  • Drafting, implementing, and owning the Company's short, medium, and long-term labor legal strategy.
  • Setting enterprise-wide labor law priorities, aligning legal strategy with business objectives, and ensuring consistent execution across regions, functions, and business units.

  • Serving as a trusted advisor to senior executives by translating complex labor risk into practical business options, recommendations, and decision points.
  • Providing expert-level legal guidance across the Company, including to senior executives and the Company's Labor Relations team, on complex labor-related topics including labor relations, union campaigns, mergers and acquisitions, and matters before state agencies and the NLRB.
  • Managing outside counsel strategy, staffing, budgets, motion practice, unfair labor practice proceedings, collective bargaining support, and other significant labor matters, including ensuring practical, cost-effective, and business-aligned outcomes.
  • Leading cross-functional initiatives with Legal, People Services, Operations, Compliance, Communications, and Labor Relations to anticipate labor risk, resolve complex issues, and drive durable business solutions.
  • Leading training regarding Federal and California labor-related workplace issues.
  • Advising senior management and DaVita business units on labor compliance and risk management to accomplish business objectives without undue risk and in alignment with the Company's long-term business strategy.
  • Developing, mentoring, and providing direction to legal and business partners supporting labor matters, including building capability, judgment, and readiness to manage complex labor issues.
  • Designing and maintaining governance processes, escalation protocols, and risk frameworks for significant labor matters, including union activity, unfair labor practice charges, collective bargaining, and labor-related agency proceedings.
  • Keeping the Company's senior management abreast of significant NLRB decisions, legislation and rulings that may affect the Company's business or policy.
  • Developing a thorough understanding of and familiarity with the Company's business, its people, markets, facilities, customers and competitors in order to identify trends and formulate appropriate structures and strategies.
  • Establishing a rapport and working relationship with teammates at all levels in order to encourage and continue the proactive use of in-house legal counsel.
  • Performing special assignments or projects.
  • Actively shaping Company culture by role-modeling behaviors, leading activities, and reinforcing DaVita's Mission and Core Values.
  • Depending on location, you must be able to travel a minimum of 25%.

A successful candidate will meet the following qualifications and characteristics:

  • Experience working with healthcare clients and unions (i.e., SEIU-UHW, NNU, etc.) is a plus, but not required.

  • A State bar qualification and good standing.

  • Law firm experience preferred; previous in-house experience preferred.

  • Strong alignment with DaVita's Mission and Core Values.

  • Strong executive-level communication skills, both written and oral.

  • Unquestioned integrity and ethics.

  • Assertive and a self-starter.

  • Maturity and strong interpersonal skills; one whose counsel and judgment are actively sought.

  • Keen understanding of business and commerce, the ability to diagnose legal problems, and independently present positive, creative solutions and alternatives for
    management.

  • Bright individual who is a "quick study" and grasps issues quickly. Not hindered by an overly bureaucratic and structured approach to solving problems.

  • Possesses good stamina and humor. Able to thrive under pressure in a fast-moving, dynamic company.

  • Maturity and flexibility to work effectively with senior management, front-line teammates, and operations personnel.
