Vice Chair for Research to join our dynamic Department in the beautiful Upper Valleyregion of New Hampshire and Vermont. Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center, the system's central clinical hub and Academic Medical Center, is located immediately adjacent to bustling college town of Hanover, NH. Hanover is home to the world-renowned Dartmouth College and the Dartmouth Geisel School of Medicine.
We are seeking a skilled, visionary, and impactful radiologist leader to define and execute a vision for building a diverse, well-funded, and successful Radiology Department Research portfolio. Our department is part of a thriving academic medical center tied to one of the best medical schools in the country. Research is core to our mission as a department and an institution. The majority of the VC's work will be working with faculty at Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center (DHMC), our main academic medical center, which includes an NCI-designated cancer center, a comprehensive stroke center, and a level I trauma center. The Vice Chair of Research will also serve an important role at the system level supporting research involving any imaging at member sites in the Dartmouth Health network.
For her or his clinical component, the Vice Chair will join a clinical section based on the candidate's subspeciality interest and preferred practice area (e.g. abdominal imaging, neuroradiology, mammography, etc). Generally, this role is best suited for candidates at the Full (or possibly Associate) Professor rank.
Position Summary The Vice Chair of Research will be a nationally known investigator, ideally one with experience helping others succeed in building research careers. Experience in research administration more broadly would also be helpful. The Vice Chair should be adept at vision setting and execution. In addition to expertise in their own area of investigation, he or she will have a reputation for excellence in delivering clinical care, teaching, mentoring, and scholarship. The Vice Chair of Research will lead our Department's efforts to build an internal research infrastructure that compliments the centralized research support at the intuitional level. The VC will liaise with our central Office of Research Operations and its leaders to ensure faculty have excellent support in their scholarly endeavors. Internally, the VC for Research will help develop, along with our VC for Academic Affairs, faculty development programs and resources to help faculty through all aspects of pursuing research careers. In the realm of recruitment, the VC for research will help lead the recruitment of dedicated PhD scientists, as well as partner with the Chair in recruiting clinician-scientists desiring a substantial research component of their career. Given the large research footprint, interfacing with the Dartmouth Cancer Center will be central to the VC's role as well. As all Vice Chairs do, the VC for AA will support all three core missions of the Department:
Supporting Clinical Excellence:
The VC for Research responsibilities do not directly involve oversight of the clinical mission, however, a successful faculty with deep expertise are able to provide the highest level of clinical care. Additionally, faculty who help push the field forward advance care here and elsewhere. The VC for Research will serve as a partner for the VC for Clinical Operations in areas of collaboration as needed, including, for example, ensuring adequate scanner resources are available for research.
Supporting Education:
The Dartmouth Health Department of Radiology is a national leader in teaching radiology to medical students, with numerous nationally and internationally recognized educators and extensive dissemination of scholarly work pertaining educational techniques and novel programs. Dartmouth Radiology hosts multiple outstanding residencies, including in Diagnostic Radiology and an integrated DR/IR program, as well as multiple fellowships. Our students, residents, and fellows almost all wish to be engaged with the research mission at some point in their learning and training. The more the successful the faculty are in the realm of research, the greater extent to which faculty can mentor learners in research techniques. Great mentorship also leads to strong research pipelines. The VC for Research will liaise with the VC for Education in areas of overlap, most notably faculty development programs centered on research techniques, and research programs involving learners and trainees.
Supporting Scholarship:
The VC for Research directly oversees the research mission of the Department. To the extent research interfaces with scholarship more generally, the VC for Research role will interface with the VC for Academic Affairs role. Supporting research in all forms, however, is uniquely within the scope of the VC for Research. Areas of responsibility include: building an internal infrastructure to support departmental research, building an enterally facing infrastructure to assist other departments in their research that involves imaging, interfacing with the operational leadership of the Department to ensure adequate time is available on scanners for research, interfacing with the 3D lab and other internal resources that serve both the clinical and research missions, interfacing with the central office for research operations, interfacing with researchers and the research infrastructure in basic science departments at the medical school, interfacing with other schools such as the Thayer School of Engineering regarding areas of research overlap, mentoring and sponsoring faculty in building research careers, and building faculty development programing and resources as needed to help train and guide radiology faculty in research methods. Dartmouth hosts an impressive array of research in clinical departments, basic science departments, engineering and other non-medical fields that allows for a huge number of opportunities for collaboration.
Reporting Structure The
Vice Chair for Research will report directly to Chair of Radiology. The Vice Chair for Research will have a home section (and section head) for their clinical work. For projects and initia tives under the Vice Chair's purview, the VC will serve as a leader for teams of physicians and staff.
Overall, the VC should have the ability to engage and inspire others, including physician colleagues, department staff, and others throughout the institution. There is a strong working relationship with other departments and divisions and all sections participates in a large volume of multidisciplinary meetings and group conferences.
The Department and Dartmouth Health The selected candidate will join Dartmouth Health's 102 radiologists. We are an internationally known Department with a deep history in the field, beginning with acquiring the first clinical x-ray in the United States in 1896. While Dartmouth Health includes many hospitals and clinic sites, this position is based at Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center, our tertiary care central hub which also serves as the system's Academic Medical Center. DHMC is the state's only Level 1 trauma center, a certified Comprehensive Stroke Center, and is home to a fleet of helicopter and ground-based medical transport services.

QualificationsRequired Licensure/CertificationsRequirements: - American Board of Radiology Certified in Diagnostic Radiology - Must obtain and maintain a medical license in both New Hampshire and Vermont - Training and/or experience in deeply academic environments, ideally with some experience in academic affairs - The ability to be appointed at the Associate or full Professor rank, depending on experience, with a preference for candidates at the Full Professor rank. - This is a 1.0 FTE position. Experience: - Demonstrated success within an academically oriented radiology department including being an established investigator - Proven ability to mentor and sponsor others. - A strong commitment to contribute a to a department-wide culture of respect, transparency, communication, optimism, collaboration, engagement, and caring.
