Full Job Description
About the Role

We are hiring a UX Designer who sits at the intersection of design and engineering. The research and judgment that define strong UX work remain at the center of this role - what changes is the toolkit. Rather than producing static design files as the primary output, you will build functioning prototypes and, where appropriate, functioning front-end code, using AI-assisted development tools to move quickly from user insight to a testable, interactive result. The person who understands the user need is the same person putting it into a form that can be tested and refined.

This role works closely with Technical Product Managers and engineers across one of our full-stack product teams, with real ownership over the end-to-end experience - from early research through to a working result that preserves design intent. If you are energized by complex, data-rich products and want your work to have a tangible impact on how organizations manage energy and sustainability, this is the role for you.

What You'll Do

  • Conduct customer and internal user research - interviews, surveys, usability testing - and synthesize findings into a clear understanding of user needs, motivations, and friction points that directly inform product direction.
  • Validate that the product is delivering the outcomes customers actually want and carry that evidence into product decisions alongside Technical Product Managers and engineers.
  • Build functioning prototypes in code rather than static mockups, so that ideas can be tested in something close to the real experience - using AI-assisted development tools such as Claude Code to move from insight to a testable build quickly.
  • Produce functioning front-end code where it is the right path to a working result, with a clear handoff point where your output is reviewed by engineering before it reaches production.
  • Define interaction patterns, hierarchy, and visual design directly in the medium customers will use, and iterate based on what testing reveals - holding the standard for accessibility and quality throughout.
  • Collaborate with Technical Product Managers and engineers to align prototypes and builds with technical constraints, product goals, and business outcomes.
  • Contribute to key AI-powered product initiatives, including Bill Capture tooling that extracts and processes utility data, and the Watts AI agent experience.

What You'll Bring

We're looking for a designer who combines sharp visual craft and a researcher's mindset with the technical fluency to build what they design - someone who asks hard questions, advocates for users, and moves with purpose in a fast-changing environment.

  • 3+ years of UX design experience, with a portfolio that demonstrates both strong visual craft and a research-informed design process.
  • Hands-on comfort building in code, including front-end work, and demonstrates fluency with AI-assisted development tools for rapid prototyping and refinement.
  • Sound judgment about what to build and what to leave out - which matters more, not less, when AI tooling makes it easy to generate almost anything.
  • Working knowledge of accessibility standards and an eye for the difference between a prototype that merely functions and one that is sound enough to build on.
  • Experience working within complex, data-heavy product environments - fintech, energy, enterprise SaaS, or CRM experience is strongly preferred.
  • Outgoing and proactive: you ask questions early, surface issues quickly, and build trust across engineering, product, and business teams.
  • A healthy skeptic who challenges assumptions with evidence, balances assertiveness with flexibility, and holds a point of view without losing sight of user needs.
  • Genuinely empathetic - you care about the people you're designing for and bring that care into every research conversation and design decision.
  • Energized by fast pace and change; comfortable operating without a complete playbook and motivated by ambiguity.
  • Bachelor's degree preferred, ideally in design, HCI, or a related field; equivalent experience accepted. A design portfolio is required.

Pay Range: $85,000 - $90,000 base salary with a 3% annual bonus.
Pay is commensurate with experience, knowledge, skills, and abilities.
