Substation Electrician
Primary Duties
The Substation Electrician installs, maintains and repairs Substation and underground electrical power lines and associated equipment. They will troubleshoot and repair faults in station equipment, underground electrical equipment and respond to emergency situations on a timely basis.
Key Responsibilities:
1. Prepare job site for construction and install new equipment per standards and in accordance with engineered drawings and plans.
2. Assist in the commissioning of equipment and testing and document results.
3. Complete switching to energize equipment and place it into service.
4. Assist in the development of traffic control plans to ensure public and worker safety during the performance of construction and maintenance.
5. Conduct annual inspections of substation and vault transformers and replace or repair identified issues.
6. Complete pre-trip inspections on commercial vehicles prior to use and operate heavy equipment required to complete work.
7. Complete disconnects and reconnects for customer service upgrades and maintenance.
8. Respond to outages and emergencies consistent with required response times.
9. Complete all required documentation to ensure regulatory compliance.
10. Inspect electrical infrastructure to identify and diagnose issues before failures can occur.
11. Troubleshoot issues and decide on the most effective solution.
12. Collaborate with team members to discuss repair/construction work and required safety precautions.
13. Comply with all health and safety requirements, maintain a safe work environment, report hazards and promote a culture of safety in the workplace.
Education, Certification and Other Qualifications Required
• Intermediate knowledge of the Utility Work Protection Code
• Advanced ability to interpret engineering drawings
• Advanced knowledge of electrical systems and theory
• Advanced knowledge of electrical trade tools, measurement and test equipment and their operation
• Intermediate knowledge of Book-7 Traffic Control Guidelines
• Advanced problem solving and troubleshooting skills
• Advanced knowledge of Electrical Utility Safety Rules, USF Standards and the Electrical Distribution Safety Regulation 22/04
• Advanced knowledge of Occupational Health and Safety requirements as it relates to individual, organizational and operational requirements
Qualifications
• 309A Electrician - Construction and Maintenance or Mearie Substation Electrician Training Program - Levels I-III
• 6+ years' experience in a similar role
• Class AZ restricted drivers' license considered an asset
Special Working Conditions/Conditions of Employment
• Maintain a valid driver's license throughout employment.
• Required to perform after-hours on-call duties on a rotational basis and respond to emergency calls.
• Required to produce a criminal record check satisfactory to Utilities Kingston.
