Full Job Description

Under general supervision of the Risk and Safety Solutions (RSS) Director of Product, the User Experience Designer shapes how researchers, safety staff, and administrators across UC campuses and medical centers interact with RSS applications every day. The User Experience Designer provides UX and UI design for web application development teams whose applications are deployed across UC campuses and medical centers. Working in an agile environment alongside other UX/UI designers, Product Managers, UX Research, and engineers, this role owns the design of assigned product areas, driving a unified user experience across RSS applications, and designs intuitive workflows through complex product surfaces. The incumbent delivers wireframes, interactive prototypes, and detailed, developer-ready design specifications; contributes to the shared design system; and ensures web applications meet campus and University-wide accessibility, design, and branding standards. Independently plans and conducts usability evaluations and user research activities for assigned products. Partners with the UX Researcher and broader UX team to translate research insights into design decisions and validate design work with end users.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications - For full consideration, applicants are encouraged to upload license and/or certification if required of the position
  • Bachelor's Degree in related area and/or equivalent experience / training
  • Three (3) or more years of experience designing user interfaces and experiences for responsive web applications including desktop, tablet and mobile phone.
  • Experience designing user centric web sites web applications to combine aesthetic quality, usability and institutional branding into a site that meet san application that meets Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) standards.
  • Experience creating and manipulating custom images, prototyping concepts and creating layout using Photoshop/Illustrator/InDesign and other Web design and graphics related tools; Proficiency with Experience using Figma for interface design - including components, auto-layout, and shared libraries - for creating mockups, interactive prototypes, and production-ready design handoffs; Working familiarity with Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator for producing supporting imagery and graphics.
  • Working knowledge of HTML, CSS, and front-end behavior sufficient to collaborate with engineers and communicate design intent through specs, redlines, and prototypes.
  • Knowledge of responsive design and typography, and skills to combine content, navigational structure, and appearance into a user-friendly integrated web application experience.
  • Oral, written and interpersonal communication skills to relay information of varying complexity to product owners, project teams and vendors.


Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience designing enterprise web applications using a combination of related Web development technologies including but not limited to: HTML, CSS, and JavaScript.
  • Experience contributing to or maintaining a design system or component library used across multiple products.
  • Experience designing complex, data-dense enterprise or internal tools - dashboards, admin interfaces, or workflows with many states, permissions, or edge cases.
  • Experience using analytics, telemetry, or session replay data to inform design decisions and measure outcomes after release.
  • Experience designing or evaluating UX for AI-powered or agentic features - including conversational surfaces, streaming and progressive disclosure, tool-use and hand-off patterns, human-in-the-loop controls, stopping or rolling back AI actions, and citations or provenance of generated content.
  • Experience using AI-assisted design and code-generation tools (e.g., Figma Make, v0, Claude Code or Claude artifacts, Bolt, Lovable, or comparable platforms) to go from prompt or brief to functional, testable prototypes - and to translate designs into production-ready components.
  • Demonstrated ability to critically evaluate AI-generated design outputs and apply AI tools responsibly within a UX workflow, maintaining accessibility, brand standards, user-centered design principles, and AI/ML design considerations such as user trust, transparency, and explainability, and to communicate the implications of AI-driven design decisions to cross-functional product teams.

Work Environment

UC Davis is a smoke and tobacco free campus effective January 1, 2014. Smoking, the use of smokeless tobacco products, and the use of unregulated nicotine products (e-cigarettes) will be strictly prohibited on any UC Davis owned or leased property, indoors and outdoors, including parking lots and residential space.

Work regularly scheduled hours (8am-5pm) to respond to needs of clients throughout the day. Work occasional evenings, weekends, or holidays to respond to project deadlines. Due to the mission critical services provided by this department, this position will work alternate or extended hours as needed to meet peak workloads. Work with clients via telephone and read computer screens for extended periods of time. Travel to and from client sites on and off campus.
