USA - Tax - Indirect Tax - California Controversy Group - Sacramento - JD/LLM - Analyst

The California Controversy Group focuses on consulting and controversy for California income/franchise and sales/use tax matters. This entails, among other things, representing clients at audit, protest, or appeal before one of the California state tax agencies.

As an Analyst within the California Controversy Group, you will be based in the Sacramento, CA office. Here you will be expected to quickly build your tax knowledge and apply it to a range of complex California income/franchise tax issues.

Skills and attributes for success

To qualify for the role, you must have :

  • Actively working towards obtaining either an LL.M. in Taxation or Juris Doctor, supported by a strong academic record.


  • Membership or anticipated membership in a US state bar.


  • The ability and willingness to travel and work in excess of standard hours when necessary. In certain circumstances, travel may be required beyond your work location based on client and project needs.


  • Access to reliable transportation to/from the EY office and client sites. A driver's license is strongly recommended as ride share and public transportation options may not be available in all locations.


  • You must either reside in or be in a commutable distance to Sacramento, CA, for this position.


  • An interest working in our team-led and leader-enabled hybrid model. Our expectation is for most people in external, client serving roles to work together in person 60% of the time over the course of an engagement, project or year.


  • Candidates must be legally authorized to work in the U.S. without the need for employer sponsorship, now and in the future.


Ideally, you will have:

  • An undergraduate degree in Accounting, Finance, Economics or a related discipline.


  • 3.0 cumulative law school GPA.


  • Professional knowledge or coursework in state and local tax.


  • The ability to analyze current and evolving tax laws to provide meaningful tax insights to clients.


  • Technical writing and research experience in a tax context.


  • Strong teaming skills and feel comfortable acting both as a leader and as one that takes direction from others.


  • Strong organization skills that will allow you to juggle multiple projects.


  • Knowledge of how to leverage firm-approved AI tools in a business setting, including Microsoft Copilot.

The base salary range for this job in all geographic locations in the US is $95,000 - $100,000. Individual salaries within those ranges are determined through a wide variety of factors including but not limited to education, experience, knowledge, skills and geography.
