Join a team of design professionals committed to shaping the future of Edmonton's built environment. This role offers an exciting opportunity to champion high-quality urban design and contribute to the long-term vibrancy of our city's neighborhoods and public spaces.

Working within the Urban Strategies section, you will play a key role in administering the Edmonton Design Committee (EDC) and reviewing land development applications and municipal initiatives through an urban design lens. You will collaborate with various City departments and community partners to ensure development proposals and public infrastructure projects meet the highest standards of accessibility, attractiveness, and functionality.

What will you do?

  • Administer the Edmonton Design Committee (EDC) by conducting orientation, managing communication, setting agendas, providing urban design advice, preparing minutes, etc.
  • Draft EDC decision letters and ensure they are clear and unambiguous
  • Support the development and implementation of the annual EDC workplan and annual report
  • Review land development applications, development permits, and storefront improvement plans to enhance urban quality
  • Liaise with file planners, development officers, applicants and City project managers to encourage improved design characteristics in proposed projects
  • Prepare urban design plans, guidelines, concept plans, and 3D models/renderings
  • Conduct urban design analysis and support updates to the Urban Design Manual


Qualifications:

  • University degree in urban design, planning, architecture, landscape architecture, or a related field
  • Two years of experience in urban design, planning, or a related field


Assets:

  • Master's degree in a related field
  • Eligibility for membership in the Alberta Professional Planners Institute (APPI), Alberta Association of Architects, or Alberta Association of Landscape Architects


Skills required for success:

  • Proficiency in urban design principles and technical applications
  • Visual communication through hand sketching and 3D modeling software
  • Expertise in Adobe Creative Suite or similar design software
  • Clear and professional verbal and written communication

Work Environment:

  • Note: This position may be eligible for a hybrid work arrangement with the flexibility to work from both home and the worksite as per the Letter of Understanding between the City of Edmonton and Civic Service Union 52
  • The weekly hours of work for this position are currently under review and may change at a future time. Any changes will be made in accordance with the City of Edmonton/Civic Service Union 52 collective agreement, and the incumbent will be notified in advance
  • This role works primarily in an indoor setting
  • Availability to attend events during the evenings and weekends may be required from time to time
  • This is a public-facing role and requires engagement and interaction with diverse people from various backgrounds with different needs, expectations and emotional states


Up to 1 permanent full-time position

Hours of Work: 33.75 hours per week

Salary Range: $51.611 - $65.218 (Hourly); $90,925.680 - $114,897.810 (Annually)
