The primary purpose of this position is to underwrite new life sciences business and renewals in a profitable manner and according to authority level and established guidelines, and participate in special projects having an impact on the business. Utilize underwriting tools to determine accurate classifications, rates, and premium charges. Knowledgeable in coverage forms and policy language; appropriate utilization of forms and exclusions. Able to provide coaching to others. Regular travel across the Northeast region is expected to develop broker relationships and drive new business opportunities in the marketplace.
What you'll be doing:- Reviewing, analyzing, accepting, and declining life sciences risks to ensure profitability for Markel.
- Communicating with underwriting management on individual accounts, current and proposed producers, and to make recommendations concerning operations, systems, and procedures when appropriate.
- Underwrite and select new business that will produce an underwriting profit.
- Review submissions and identify exposure and risk from information provided.
- Underwrite renewal business and review terms conditions and pricing.
- Monitor producers for profitability and production.
- Monitor results of the overall book of business assigned; and recommend corrective action as necessary.
- Drive new business production by actively marketing to wholesale broker partners, identifying high-potential distribution relationships, and executing outreach strategies aligned with team appetite and growth goals.
- Participate in audits and/or underwriting meetings as required.
- Cross-sell opportunities with other Markel divisions through the promotion of Markel's products and services.
- Coordinate with other Markel platforms on common accounts.
- Manage broker relationships within the wholesale channel.
- Travel within the Northeast region marketing to brokers.
What we're looking for:- Minimum 3 years of current experience underwriting profitable life sciences or related business (position title will depend upon experience);
- Bachelor's degree and industry designations (proven, outstanding experience can be substituted for education);
- Proven outstanding reputation with wholesale distribution;
- Knowledge of pricing accounts using loss rating and actuarial modeling tools/techniques;
- Willingness to frequently travel across the Northeast region for broker visits, industry events, and in-person relationship development to drive new life sciences business.
- Ability to work in a fast-paced environment;
- Proven excellent customer service skills;
- Demonstrated technical knowledge and skills reflective of progression of positions of increasing responsibility;
- Must have excellent oral and written communication skills;
- Superb MS Office and underwriting system skills;
- Strong analytical and organizational skills;
- Must be a team player that enjoys a flexible and spontaneous business environment.

Pay information:The base salary offered for the successful candidate will be based on compensable factors such as job-relevant education, job-relevant experience, training, licensure, demonstrated competencies, geographic location, and other factors. The national average salary range for the Underwriter position is $74,320 - $102,190/year with a 20% bonus potential and the Sr. Underwriter position is $92,880 - 127,710/year with a 25% bonus potential.
