Position Summary

Ryan Specialty's National Specialty Programs (NSP) is seeking an Underwriter to support the profitable growth and management of our Pest Control Insurance Program. This role is responsible for evaluating, selecting, pricing, and managing commercial insurance risks for pest control operators and related service businesses throughout the United States.

The Underwriter will partner closely with retail and wholesale brokers to deliver tailored insurance solutions while maintaining underwriting discipline and portfolio profitability. The successful candidate will possess strong commercial underwriting skills, a relationship-driven mindset, and a solid understanding of service-industry and contractor-related exposures.

What will your job entail?

Underwriting & Risk Assessment
  • Underwrite new and renewal commercial property and casualty business in accordance with program guidelines, carrier authority, and underwriting standards.
  • Review and analyze applications, loss runs, operational details, financial information, and supporting documentation to assess risk quality and eligibility.
  • Evaluate exposures associated with pest control operations, including residential and commercial pest management, termite services, fumigation, wildlife control, mosquito abatement, lawn and ornamental services, and related environmental service operations.
  • Determine risk acceptability, pricing, coverage terms, and policy conditions based on underwriting analysis and program appetite.
  • Review broker requests for coverage modifications, endorsements, and exceptions while maintaining underwriting profitability and consistency.
  • Identify emerging trends, loss drivers, and exposure changes impacting portfolio performance.
  • Ensure compliance with underwriting authority, carrier requirements, regulatory standards, and internal controls.
Portfolio Management
  • Manage an assigned book of business to achieve premium growth, retention, and profitability objectives.
  • Monitor portfolio metrics including production, hit ratios, renewal retention, loss ratio performance, and account profitability.
  • Develop renewal strategies and partner with brokers to maximize retention of quality business.
  • Identify opportunities for profitable growth through account expansion, cross-selling opportunities, and targeted business development efforts.
  • Support forecasting, budgeting, and production planning activities.
Broker Relationship Management
  • Build and maintain strong relationships with retail and wholesale broker partners.
  • Serve as a trusted underwriting resource and subject matter expert for pest control and environmental service risks.
  • Collaborate with brokers to design coverage solutions that address client needs while maintaining underwriting discipline.
  • Deliver responsive, accurate, and professional service throughout the submission, quote, bind, and issuance process.
  • Participate in broker meetings, industry events, and marketing initiatives to promote program growth.
Operational Excellence
  • Maintain complete underwriting documentation and ensure file quality standards are met.
  • Collaborate with operations, claims, actuarial, compliance, and leadership teams to support program performance.
  • Contribute to underwriting guideline enhancements and process improvements.
  • Stay informed on market conditions, regulatory developments, emerging risks, and industry trends impacting pest control and environmental service businesses.
  • Support strategic initiatives designed to expand the program and improve underwriting results.
Qualifications
Education
  • Bachelor's degree in Risk Management, Insurance, Business Administration, Finance, or a related field preferred.
  • Equivalent industry experience will be considered.
Experience
  • 3-7+ years of commercial Property & Casualty underwriting experience.
  • Experience underwriting service industry, environmental services, contractor, small-to-mid market, specialty casualty, or program business preferred.
  • Direct experience underwriting pest control, lawn care, landscape, environmental services, or related specialty classes strongly preferred.
  • MGA, MGU, E&S, program administrator, wholesale brokerage, or specialty carrier experience preferred.
  • Demonstrated success managing broker relationships and producing profitable underwriting results.
Preferred Industry Expertise

Experience underwriting risks such as:

  • Pest control operators
  • Termite contractors
  • Fumigation services
  • Wildlife control operators
  • Mosquito control services
  • Lawn care and ornamental spray operations
  • Vegetation management contractors
  • Environmental service contractors
  • Exterior maintenance service providers
Licenses & Certifications
  • Property & Casualty license and/or Surplus Lines license, where required.
  • CPCU, ARM, AU, CRIS, or other industry designations preferred.

The target salary range for this position is $96,000.00 - $120,000.00 annually.

The wage range for this role considers many factors, such as training, transferable skills, work experience, licensure and certification, business needs, and market demands. The pay range is subject to change and may be modified in the future. Full-time roles are eligible for bonuses and benefits.
