About the role

We are looking for an Underground Shift Coordinator to support the safe construction, commissioning, and operation of the Kennecott Underground Mine.

Reporting to the Underground Operations Superintendent, on a 5/5/4 rotating shift roster and working collaboratively with operational, functional, and contractor teams, you will be responsible for:

  • Championing Rio Tinto Kennecott's safety standards and contributing to a culture where everyone goes home safe
  • Ensuring permits are in place and understood before work begins
  • Conducting daily inspections to support quality, safety, and compliance outcomes
  • Coordinating underground work activities across construction, operations, and contractor teams
  • Integrating daily plans between surface and underground operations to support safe and efficient execution
  • Supporting pre-commissioning and commissioning activities as projects progress
  • Maintaining accurate daily reports, project documentation, and work records
  • Collaborating with team members and contractor partners to coordinate activities, share knowledge, and support successful project delivery


About you

  • A commitment to the safety of yourself and your team
  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Demonstrated experience working in underground mining environments
  • Experience supporting or leading teams in an operational or supervisory capacity
  • Exposure to underground development, stope mining, and/or underground construction activities
  • Strong problem-solving skills with the ability to adapt in dynamic operating environments
  • Confidence using Microsoft Office applications and other digital systems
  • Experience with SAP or similar operational systems

Our Kennecott mine is a world-class, fully integrated copper mining operation, including a concentrator, smelter, and refinery, located just outside Salt Lake City, Utah, in the United States. We produce copper, precious metals including gold and silver, molybdenum, and sulfuric acid.
