Role OverviewThe role of the Lead Hand Heavy Duty Mechanic is to take a leadership role within the maintenance team, providing guidance and support for the troubleshooting, repair, and maintenance of heavy underground mining equipment. Working closely with supervisors, this position ensures that mechanical issues are efficiently diagnosed and addressed, while ensuring that all tasks are completed safely and in accordance with operational procedures and industry standards. The Lead Hand also helps coordinate daily workflow, supports safety compliance, and contributes to the overall reliability and performance of the equipment. The Leadhand will fill in for supervisor duties in the absence of a supervisor on shift, which the duties will include performing daily crew safety meetings, creating work orders and organizing daily work, performing daily operational communication meetings, and reporting directly to the UG Maintenance Superintendent in the absence of an on-shift supervisor within the department.
Key Responsibilities- Leadership & Team Development: Lead by example, demonstrating a strong commitment to safety, quality work, and efficiency. Provide guidance, mentorship, and support to the maintenance team, ensuring high standards of performance and fostering a positive, safety-focused work environment. Perform daily crew safety meetings in the absence of a supervisor on shift
- Equipment Maintenance: Perform scheduled maintenance and inspections on underground heavy equipment to ensure optimal performance and compliance with safety standards.
- Troubleshooting & Diagnostics: Identify and diagnose mechanical issues in heavy equipment, using advanced diagnostic tools and techniques to pinpoint malfunctions and minimize downtime.
- Repairs & Overhauls: Conduct repairs and component overhauls on underground equipment, including engines, hydraulic systems, transmissions, and braking systems, ensuring all work is completed to manufacturer specifications.
- Safety Compliance: Adhere to all safety protocols and procedures while performing maintenance and repairs, ensuring a safe work environment for yourself and your team.
- Documentation & Reporting: Maintain accurate records of all maintenance, repairs, and inspections performed. Complete detailed reports on equipment status, repairs conducted, and parts used.
- Operational Efficiency: Collaborate with the operations and maintenance teams to ensure minimal disruption to production schedules by performing timely and efficient repairs.
- Use of Tools & Equipment: Safely operate and maintain a variety of hand tools, power tools, and diagnostic equipment required for the repair and maintenance of heavy underground machinery.
- Communicate with Operations: Through daily operational update meetings and by working with dispatch and other maintenance departments to procure the materials, work areas, and tooling and equipment required to perform equipment repairs safely and efficiently.
Qualifications- Journeyperson Red Seal Mechanic
- SAP or similar CMMS experience an asset
- Microsoft Office program operation and application skills
- Maclean & Caterpillar experience an asset.
- Sandvik drill experience an asset
- Ability to identify, analyze and resolve problems
- Ability to work safely and effectively in a team environment as well as independently
- Excellent safety record
- Good communication and interpersonal skills
- Experience with underground mining equipment.
The anticipated salary for this position will be between $130,000 to $138,000. A Lead Hand Top-Up of $5,500 will be in addition to the anticipated salary.
