Position Description:

Our people division is growing, and we are looking for a Safety and Health Supervisor at our Cortez operations. The successful candidate will work under the guidance and direction of the Safety & Health Superintendent to develop and implement strategies to control immediate risks in the workplace and solve S&H problems or issues. Coach, teach, mentor, and support personnel holding subordinates accountable for all expectations and responsibilities.

Responsibilities:
  • Serve as a technical safety advisor, mentor, and resource to site and division management, Safety & Health professionals, and the workforce.
  • Lead the development, implementation, and continuous improvement of safety training strategies designed to address workplace risks, regulatory requirements, identified gaps, and organizational needs.
  • Develop, coordinate, and deliver MSHA-required training, including New Hire Orientation, Annual Refresher Training, Contractor Hazard Training, and other site-specific training programs.
  • Evaluate training effectiveness through field observations, inspections, audits, incident trends, employee feedback, and other leading indicators; identify opportunities for improvement and implement corrective actions.
  • Partner with site management and S&H professionals to identify immediate and emerging risks and develop practical solutions to control hazards and prevent incidents.
  • Participate in internal inspections, audits, and field observations to identify unsafe conditions, behaviors, compliance gaps, training deficiencies, and opportunities for improvement.
  • Maintain a structured weekly and monthly training and S&H activity plan for assigned areas or divisions, ensuring training priorities align with operational risks and business needs.
  • Work collaboratively with employees, supervisors, and management to ensure compliance with applicable federal, state, MSHA, and company standards, policies, and systems.
  • Support division management during MSHA, state, and other regulatory inspections and provide technical guidance related to training and compliance requirements.
  • Serve as a resource during incident investigations to ensure incidents are thoroughly investigated, root causes are identified, and corrective actions effectively address contributing factors.
  • Facilitate and support Team-Based and Formal Risk Assessments by identifying training requirements, developing action plans, and tracking actions through completion.
  • Maintain accurate training records, documentation, databases, and compliance reporting to ensure information is current and readily available for internal and regulatory requirements.
  • Maintain active involvement with division safety teams, committees, and workforce engagement initiatives.
  • Provide ongoing coaching, mentoring, and safety leadership to employees, supervisors, and management to strengthen the organization's safety culture.
  • Participate in toolbox meetings, safety meetings, pre-shift meetings, and other workforce engagement and training activities.
  • Identify and implement opportunities to standardize training practices, improve employee competency, and enhance the overall effectiveness of the site's safety training system.
  • Stay current with regulatory requirements, industry best practices, emerging risks, and changes to company standards and incorporate applicable requirements into training programs.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.


Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree in Safety, Occupational Health, Industrial Hygiene, or a related field with 6+ years of relevant industry experience preferred; or
  • 8-12 years of relevant industry experience with demonstrated leadership and progressive responsibility in Safety & Health preferred.
  • MSHA Blue Card Instructor qualification required.
  • Strong knowledge and understanding of the Federal Mine Safety and Health Act of 1977 and applicable MSHA regulations required.
  • Demonstrated knowledge and experience in industrial hygiene, occupational health, and occupational health and hygiene principles required.
  • Experience developing, delivering, and evaluating safety training programs in a mining or industrial environment preferred.
  • Experience with incident investigation, root cause analysis, corrective action development, and incident case management preferred.
  • Experience with workers' compensation processes and occupational injury management preferred.
  • Demonstrated ability to assess complex safety and training challenges and develop practical, creative, and sustainable solutions.
  • Strong communication, presentation, facilitation, and interpersonal skills with the ability to effectively engage employees at all organizational levels.
  • Demonstrated ability to mentor, coach, and influence employees and leaders to improve safety performance and accountability.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities, projects, and deadlines while maintaining a high level of organization and effectiveness.
  • Proficiency in safety, training, and compliance databases and documentation systems.
  • Professional Safety & Health certifications such as CMSP, CSP, CIH, or equivalent preferred.
