POSITION SUMMARY

The Tunnel Shift Engineer is responsible for providing technical and operational support to tunneling activities during assigned shifts, ensuring work is executed safely, efficiently, and in accordance with project specifications, construction methods, and schedules. The role supports day-to-day tunnel construction and TBM operations, provides engineering oversight in the field, and assists with coordination between crews, supervision, and project management.

Reports to: Tunnel Construction Manager

The Tunnel Shift Engineer's key responsibilities are:

  • Provide on-shift engineering support for tunnel construction and TBM operations, including excavation, segment installation, ground support, and logistics activities.
  • Monitor construction activities to ensure compliance with approved drawings, specifications, Construction Method Statements, and Safety Plans.
  • Assist with planning and coordination of daily work activities in collaboration with the Tunnel Superintendent and shift supervisors.
  • Maintain accurate shift reports, daily logs, field records, and production data in accordance with company and project requirements.
  • Track quantities, progress, and key performance indicators to support schedule and productivity objectives.
  • Identify and report non-conformances, constructability issues, and potential risks, proposing corrective actions as required.
  • Support implementation of quality control procedures and assist with inspections and testing activities.
  • Ensure compliance with all safety requirements, including monitoring of ventilation, ground conditions, confined space controls, and emergency response procedures.
  • Promote and enforce adherence to the Ontario Occupational Health and Safety Act, Construction Act, and project-specific safety standards.
  • Coordinate with survey, quality, safety, maintenance, and logistics teams to support efficient tunnel operations.
  • Interface with subcontractors and suppliers during assigned shifts to ensure work is performed safely and efficiently.
  • Assist with troubleshooting TBM, mechanical, and civil construction issues in coordination with specialized teams.
  • Participate in toolbox talks, shift handovers, and coordination meetings to ensure continuity of operations.
  • Travel to project sites and work rotating shifts, including nights and weekends, as required by tunnel operations.


EDUCATION AND QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering, Construction Engineering, or a related discipline.
  • Minimum 5-10 years of experience in heavy civil construction, with demonstrated experience in tunneling projects.
  • Experience working with TBM operations (slurry TBM experience is a strong asset).
  • Previous exposure to underground works, including tunnel excavation, segmental lining, shafts, and underground utilities.
  • Solid understanding of construction drawings, specifications, and field engineering practices.
  • Strong knowledge of construction safety regulations and best practices applicable to underground works.
  • Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced, shift-based environment.
  • Strong organizational skills with attention to detail and accuracy in field documentation.
  • Proven ability to work collaboratively with supervision, crews, and multidisciplinary teams.


JOB REQUIREMENTS

  • Demonstrated ability to provide on-site engineering support and assist with supervision of tunneling activities.
  • Strong communication skills, both written and verbal, with the ability to convey technical information clearly.
  • Thorough understanding of safety protocols and the ability to actively support and reinforce safe work practices.
  • Ability to monitor progress, identify issues, and support adaptive planning to meet schedule and quality objectives.
  • Proficiency with standard engineering and reporting tools used in tunnel construction projects.


Compensation Range: CAD 175,000 - 185,000
