Transportation Lead

Job Description

This role serves as a trusted advisor to public and private sector clients, providing strategic and technical leadership on complex transportation infrastructure initiatives. The Transportation Lead is responsible for the planning, analysis, and design of projects while guiding decision-making and advancing practical, forward-looking solutions.

They provide technical oversight across projects, mentor and elevate team performance, and contribute to client development and the growth of the transportation practice.

This role is critical to delivering high-quality, implementable transportation solutions that support community growth, improve mobility, and enhance safety across municipal and regional systems.

Responsibilities
  • Lead complex, multi-disciplinary transportation programs and major projects.
  • Lead the planning, analysis, and design of transportation systems, including:
    • Roadways, streetscaping, and complete streets
    • Interchanges; freeway, expressway and arterial intersections; traffic signals and urban and rural roundabouts
    • Traffic calming and safe mobility
    • Active transportation and transit
    • Parking studies and access management
    • Functional and detailed design
  • Oversee and prepare transportation engineering reports, design drawings, specifications, and cost estimates.
  • Apply sound engineering principles and professional judgment to develop innovative and practical solutions.
  • Ensure designs comply with municipal, provincial, and national standards and guidelines.
  • Act as Project Manager, Technical Lead, or Subject Matter Expert on transportation engineering projects.
  • Monitor project progress and ensure deliverables are completed on time and within budget.
  • Collaborate with internal disciplines including civil engineering, land development, geomatics, and landscape architecture.
  • Manage subconsultants, coordinate with interested parties, and participate in public engagement.
  • Develop and maintain strong client relationships with municipalities, advocates, and government agencies.
  • Develop proposal strategies and provide technical leadership on key proposals.
  • Lead proposal pursuits, including scope development, scheduling, and fee estimation.
  • Pursue new business opportunities and contribute to building strategic client relationships to support the sustainability and growth of the transportation practice.
  • Represent Al-Terra in meetings with clients, regulatory agencies, and stakeholders.
  • Provide mentorship, guidance, and technical oversight to young professionals as well as other technical staff.
  • Support professional development and skill growth within the team.
  • Contribute to a collaborative, supportive, and high-performance team environment.
  • Help guide quality control processes and technical standards for the team.
  • Ensure all work meets Al-Terra's quality standards and professional obligations.
  • Participate in internal technical review and quality management processes.

Requirements
  • A Bachelor's degree in Engineering.
  • Minimum 12 years of relevant transportation engineering experience, preferably in a consulting role.
  • A P.Eng. is required.
  • A member in good standing with APEGA or eligible for registration.
  • Valid driver's license and ability to travel as required.
  • Ability to pass a background check.

Qualifications
  • Strong technical experience with:
    • Transportation planning and design
    • Urban design analysis
    • Transportation operational analysis
    • Municipal, provincial, and national design standards
    • Transportation modeling tools (e.g., Synchro, SIDRA, VISUM, HCS, AutoTURN)
    • AutoCAD and Civil 3D (preferred)
    • Experience with TORUS, ARCADY and/or Rodel roundabout software is considered an asset
    • A functional knowledge of ArcGIS is considered an asset
  • Project management skills, including proficiency with PM software and methodologies.
  • Demonstrated experience managing engineering projects and teams.
  • Strong organizational and time management skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Strong client relationship and stakeholder management abilities.
  • Ability to present technical information clearly and confidently.
  • Proficiency in proposal development.

Working Conditions
  • Full Time 40 hours per week
  • Our team works primarily full-time from our office. However, we prioritize employee satisfaction and work-life balance. When possible, we can offer remote working options and flexible hours. These options are subject to workload, departmental needs, and their impact on the team.
  • Travel to other project sites in western Canada may be required, with the understanding that overnight stays and overtime, including weekends, may be required.

Physical Requirements
  • Ability to lift 25 pounds.
  • Work at a desk for extended periods of time.
  • Ability to traverse uneven terrain on job sites.
