Job DescriptionTransportation Practice What We're Looking For:Michael Baker is seeking a Transportation Technical Manager to join our Chicago, IL team. This leadership role is ideal for a transportation professional with strong technical expertise, project delivery experience, and a passion for mentoring teams. The successful candidate will lead the delivery of roadway and transportation projects for a variety of public-sector clients across Illinois and the Midwest, while supporting business development, client relationships, and technical excellence. Experience with roadway design, transportation infrastructure, and project management is essential.
What You'll Do:- Lead the technical delivery of roadway and transportation projects from planning through final design.
- Oversee project quality through QA/QC reviews of plans, specifications, reports, and cost estimates.
- Manage project teams, schedules, budgets, and staff utilization to ensure successful project execution.
- Provide technical guidance and mentorship to engineers and designers.
- Develop scopes of work, fee estimates, and support proposal pursuits.
- Build and maintain strong relationships with clients, including IDOT, counties, municipalities, and other transportation agencies.
- Support business development efforts and identify opportunities for growth within the Chicago market.
- Participate in professional organizations, industry events, and client meetings to strengthen Michael Baker's presence in the region.
- Foster a collaborative team environment focused on quality, innovation, and professional development.
What You Need to Succeed:- Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering or related field.
- 10+ years of transportation engineering experience.
- Professional Engineer (PE) license required.
- Demonstrated experience leading roadway or transportation design projects.
- Strong knowledge of IDOT design standards, project delivery processes, and transportation engineering best practices.
- Excellent leadership, client management, communication, and team-building skills.
- Ability to manage multiple projects and priorities simultaneously.
Preferred Qualifications- Experience serving as a Technical Manager, Project Manager, or Department Lead within a consulting environment.
- Familiarity with OpenRoads Designer, MicroStation, and other transportation design software.
- Experience delivering projects for IDOT, Illinois Tollway, municipalities, and local agencies.
- Design-Build and alternative delivery experience.
- Proven success in business development, proposal support, and client relationship management.
CompensationThe approximate compensation range for this position is $75.00 to $82.00 an hour. This compensation range is a good faith estimate for the position at the time of posting. Actual compensation is dependent upon factors such as education, qualifications, experience, skillset, and physical work location.
