Job SummaryThe primary responsibility of the Transportation Manager is the oversight of international and domestic transportation service providers for all company locations and related logistics processes. This position requires knowledge of transportation planning processes and systems, freight rate negotiations for the modes of shipment including truckload, LTL, Parcel, International freight services (FCL, LCL, Air), US Customs, HAZMAT and DOT regulation and freight payment and auditing services. Additionally, the Transportation Manager leads the freight payables and accrual process.
Essential Duties- Supervises Transportation staff responsible for transportation planning, carrier, and freight payables.
- Performs a variety of tasks leading the execution of transportation processes for truckload, LTL, parcel, and international shipping.
- Reviews order management, routing process, and freight costs to plan the most cost-efficient transportation processes that enable the company to provide on time shipments to customers.
- Manages orders based on shipment characteristics (e.g. ship dates, backorder status, weight, cube, geography), secures capacity and negotiates spot rates where appropriate to accurately plan shipment modes for warehouse pick operations.
- Manages carrier relationships, tracks, and provides quarterly performance feedback to service providers.
- Manages the company's private fleet operations, including drivers, maintenance, load planning, and DOT/Federal record-keeping compliance.
- Supports Customer Service department to achieve the required service levels for our customers.
- Ensures accuracy of freight contract tariffs, rates, and related charges agreed upon by the company to maintain internal freight accrual accuracy for P&L reporting.
- Oversees the freight payables process, performance of freight payables service provider, and communication of exceptions.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Qualifications, Skills, Abilities and Educational RequirementsRequired- Bachelor's degree in Business Administration or related field
- 5 - 7 years of experience as a Transportation leader with multiple direct reports
- 3 - 5 years of experience in RFP/RFQ process to negotiate contracts with carriers
- Domestic (CF49) and International (IMDG) HAZMAT Certification, or the ability to obtain certification
- Experience implementing and managing transportation management systems (TMS)
- Experience leading freight payables approval and reconciliation process
- Intermediate experience utilizing computer software such as Microsoft Office Suite
- Strong data analytic skills with demonstrated experience in data analysis and statistics that will provide key insights into freight cost management
- Ability to prepare cost analysis, ad-hoc reports, and apply analytical decision-making processes
- Demonstrates strong problem-solving skills and the ability to adapt to change
- Strong attention to detail, organizational, and planning skills
- Experience working in a fast paced and high-volume work environment
- Proactive "self-starter" with a strong attention to detail
- Exceptional communication skills, both verbal and written, enabling effective interaction with employees on all levels, including executive leadership, as well as carriers and customers
Preferred- Knowledge of JDE, WMS, and ERP software or similar applications
