The Transportation GIS Specialist's primary purpose is to maintain geospatial information in order to enhance Cary's GIS system. The GIS Specialist is responsible for the creation, maintenance, analysis, and visualization of transportation geospatial data which supports activities such as street improvements, traffic calming, greenway and sidewalk planning, and asset management or the overall transportation network. The Transportation GIS Specialist performs responsible and professional GIS, graphic arts, and AutoCAD support for Cary's Transportation Department as well as other Town departments, as needed.

Work is performed under the general supervision of the Assistant Director of Special Projects.

Typical Tasks
  • Responsible for creating, modifying, and maintaining transportation assets within the Town-wide GIS system, covering phases from approved site plans to as-built record drawings and field reviews;
  • Creates and maintains Transportation data in cartographic maps, graphics, presentations, and webpages;
  • Develops, supports, and maintains multi-departmental GIS data and data management workflows;
  • Fulfills internal and external information requests, including but not limited to as-builts, plat research, and GIS data exports;
  • Updates, plots, and integrates GIS and AutoCAD graphics related to maps and visuals.
  • Recommends and participates in GIS process improvements;
  • Ensures quality control of all GIS data for internal and external viewing;
  • Creates and maintains documentation of procedures utilized to complete projects;
  • Provides general GIS customer service, both internally and externally;
  • Researches industry trends, solutions, and best practices;
  • Performs other job-related tasks as required.


Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
  • Knowledge of ArcMap/ArcGIS Pro, ArcGIS Online.
  • Knowledge of Survey 123, Collector, and other ESRI apps.
  • Knowledge and experience with transportation infrastructure, including roadway and street networks, sidewalks, greenways and multimodal transportation systems.
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office suite.
  • Knowledge of customer service principles and ability to apply them.
  • Proven research skills.
  • Strong critical thinking and analysis skills.
  • Ability to write and communicate effectively.
  • Ability to read and interpret construction, record, and plat drawings.

Minimum and Preferred Qualifications
Education and Experience

Requires a combination of education and experience equivalent to graduation from an accredited college or university with a bachelor's degree in Geography, Urban Planning, Computer Science, or a related field.

Requires some experience working with GIS/CAD, including working with GIS software, database software, or other related software.

Experience in the creation of graphics with output to various forms, including digital, web, paper, and offset printing products is preferred.

Physical Requirements

Work in this class is generally inside and sedentary. An employee must have such visual acuity as to be able to read and write handwritten and typewritten material. Work requires looking at a computer screen and maps for long periods of time. An employee in this class must be able to talk and hear to respond to the public and other employees. Fingering skills are necessary to use a computer keyboard and mouse.
