As the The Training & Qualifications Supervisor, you will provide centralized leadership, governance, and quality assurance for employee training, certification, and recertification across the Recreation Service Delivery (RSD) and the Corporate First Aid Program. This position is accountable for ensuring staff have the required qualifications, skills, and training supports to deliver safe, consistent, and compliant public recreation services. The Training and Qualifications Supervisor is also primarily responsible for all people-management/supervision duties, overseeing unionized Local 37 & Local 38 staff. Primary duties include:
- Responsible for supervisor duties, pay approvals, and budget management for the training portfolio. They also manage trainer performance by setting expectations, monitoring delivery quality, and addressing performance concerns in alignment with City processes and collective agreement requirements.
- Ensure that new and existing staff acquire job specific skills and knowledge that aligns with program expectations and outcomes.
- Acquire knowledge and apply relevant legislation, policies and procedures and collective agreements.
- Responsible for approving time and labor, overtime, lieu time, time off and vacations.
- Develop and maintain portfolio specific staff manuals, procedures and best practices. This includes creating documents, distributing to staff, and ensuring that information is accurate.
- Fosters a safe and respectful workplace within a multi-disciplinary work environment.
- Contribute to Local 37, Local 38, and Local 709 committee work by providing oversight of Recreation Service Delivery training needs.
Qualifications - A completed 2 year diploma in Recreation or a related field and 6 years of experience leading in a unionized environment; OR
- A 4 year degree in Recreation or a related field and 4 years of experience leading in a unionized environment.
- Qualification in one or more of the following areas is required. (does not need to be current):
- National Lifeguard Instructor - Lifesaving First Aid Instructor.
- Swim/Lifesaving Instructor Trainer.
- Supervision Evaluation and Enhancement SEE Auditor.
- Other Leadership-competency level 2 or higher courses.
- Relevant Alberta Recreation Facility Personnel courses, such as pool or arena operator courses.
- Experience with aquatic programming is required.
- An understanding of Lifesaving Society programs, governance, policies, and procedures will be considered an asset.
- This position requires resolving complex training delivery and quality assurance issues that affect staff readiness, service continuity, and compliance with training standards.
