DescriptionYOU MUST BE A CURRENT METRO PUBLIC WORKS EMPLOYEE TO BE CONSIDERED FOR THIS POSITIONThe Traffic Engineering Administrator position oversees the Traffic Engineering and Electrical Maintenance teams. The administrator is responsible for the maintenance and operations of Metro owned and maintained traffic signals, school flashers, streetlights, and signage and pavement markings within the public ROW. Additionally, the administrator is responsible for coordinating with KYTC regarding maintenance and operations of State-owned traffic signals within Jefferson County.
Summary Objective
The purpose of this position is to direct the planning, design, and operations of municipal transportation
networks. Oversee traffic signal systems, manage capital improvement projects, ensure compliance with safety
standards, and collaborate with others to optimize mobility and improve roadway safety. Ensure compliance
with MUTCD, local and state ordinances and laws.
This class works independently, under limited supervision, reporting major activities through daily
communication and periodic meetings.
Examples of DutiesESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

• Supervises, directs, and evaluates assigned staff, processing employee concerns and problems, directing work, coaching, disciplining, and completing employee performance evaluations.
• Coordinates, assigns and reviews work and establishes work schedules; maintains standards; monitors status of work in progress; inspects completed work assignments; answers questions; gives advice and direction as needed.
• Enforces safety procedures to ensure overall safety of daily operations.
• Attends meetings and represents the department to the public to provide information and answer questions concerning programs, projects and activities.
• Reviews and approves engineering plans, specifications and studies and coordinates the planning and implementation of projects.
• Evaluates projects for compliance with ordinances, laws, regulations, policies and engineering standards. • Monitors the development and completion of surveys and field investigations.
• Administers and oversees traffic design, operations, regulatory signage fabrication and installation, street markings, maintenance of vacant properties.
• Investigates complaints from the public concerning public works activities and provides direction in resolving problems and customer concerns.
• Provides technical assistance and instruction regarding agency engineering and maintenance projects.
• Monitors operational and capital expenditures, directs and coordinates vendor contracts and assists with budget preparation.
• Coordinates special events with requesting agencies.
• Performs related work as assigned.
Minimum RequirementsMINIMUM EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:
• Bachelor's Degree in Engineering, Transportation Planning, or related discipline.
• Ten (10) years of experience in traffic management or civil engineering.
• EQUIVALENCY: An equivalent combination of education, training and experience may be substituted.
OTHER MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
• Must be an Engineer-in-Training (EIT) and be eligible to apply for and take the Professional Engineer (PE) exam in the state of Kentucky within six (6) months from hire date.
• Must possess and maintain a valid state driver's license with an acceptable driving history.
• Must wear safety equipment as mandated by OSHA.
• Must work a varied schedule, which could include being on 24-hour call.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
Physical demands refer to the requirements for physical exertion and coordination of limb and body movement.
• Required to work extended hours, including evenings and weekends, and may be required to travel outside City boundaries to attend meetings.
• Light to moderate finger pressure to manipulate keyboard, equipment controls, and office equipment.
• Frequent walking, standing, bending, stooping, pushing/pulling, and twisting at waist; lifting objects weighing up to 35 lbs. and transporting distances up to 50 yards.
UNAVOIDABLE HAZARDS (WORK ENVIRONMENT):
Unavoidable hazards refer to the job conditions that may lead to injury or health hazards even though precautions have been taken.
• May occasionally work under adverse conditions such as inclement weather, dust, environment subject to sudden changes, wet or uneven surfaces and rough terrain.
• May come into contact with water, toxic fumes, liquids or gases, allergens around vehicles, moving equipment, electricity, and extremely noisy environments.
