Full Job Description
Tool Room Supervisor

Senior level position, leading the day-to-day operations of the tool room, managing all aspects of injection molding tool maintenance, repair, optimization, continuous improvement, and onboarding.

Salary range: $85,000 - $105,000 DOE

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES INCLUDE

(other duties may be assigned)

  • Life cycle management & maintenance of proprietary and customer owned tooling.
  • Lead the tooling team to include training, development, mentorship, ensuring accountability, day-to-day supervision, and motivation.
  • Ensure the safe operation of the tooling shop.
  • Ensure compliance to ISO 13485 quality management system and current Good Manufacturing Processes to enable delivery of quality products to the customer.
  • Manage and schedule tooling preventative maintenance and repairs. Manage outside tooling vendors for major repairs. Quote tooling, approve scope of work, make sourcing decisions, audit suppliers, and track mold builds.
  • Evaluate current tooling, forecast needed repairs and/or replacements of molds.
  • Ensure preventative maintenance schedule is both established and followed with extreme attention to detail.
  • Manage organizing and maintaining spare components and various consumables.
  • Work closely with operations, maintenance, and process engineering to solve manufacturing issues and make improvements to cycle time, cavitation, and quality.
  • Training and development of tool room personnel.
  • Create, modify, or improve tooling related procedures.
  • Support mold builds and tool trials, including design for manufacturability.
  • Ensure all Tool Room personnel adhere to the Health, Safety and Quality policies, including use of PPE
  • Maintain a clean and safe work environment and keeps work area clean of debris.


PERSONNEL SUPERVISED

Tool Room Personnel including Mold Mechanic I, II, III, and IV.

QUALIFICATIONS

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE

  • Associate Degree in a technical field, Journeyman Toolmaker Certificate, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Prior experience managing mold repair or build projects with outside tool shops to control costs and deliver excellence, on-time.
  • Prior experience and understanding of de-coupled injection molding and structured process development.


Preferred:

  • Experience as a Tool Room Manager, Tooling Engineer or Tooling Manager in a medical molding environment.
  • RJG or similar training.


SKILLS-ABILITIES

  • Knowledge of mold design, fabrication, development, testing, validation, and processing.
  • Strong understanding of preventative maintenance and repair of molds, as well as a strong understanding of typical machining, Electrical Discharge Machining (EDM's), etc.
  • Experience with Hot Runner manifold systems
  • Understanding of servo, hydraulic and pneumatic driven mold components
  • Familiarity with ISO 13485 and current Good Manufacturing Practice.
  • High-energy, team-based management style with a positive personality.
  • Attention to detail, ability to prioritize, maintain flexibility, high level of initiative.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite (Outlook, PowerPoint, Excel).
  • Ability to read and interpret technical drawings.
  • Self-motivated, conscientious, with a results-oriented mindset.
  • Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.
  • Ability to write routine reports and correspondence.
  • Ability to speak clearly before groups of customers or fellow employees.
  • Ability to use measuring tools, depth gauges, height gauges, micrometers and calipers.
  • Strong technical aptitude, as well as analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Sound judgment - ability to work efficiently with many competing demands.
  • Regularly use hands and fingers to handle or feel; reach with hands and arms
  • Ability to frequently sit, stand, walk, bend, and occasionally lift or move up to fifty pounds.
  • Occasionally lift up to 50 lbs and move 100+ pounds with proper gear or equipment.
  • Required vision abilities include close vision, distance vision, color vision and the ability to adjust focus.


WORK ENVIRONMENT

Frequently exposed to moving mechanical parts. Occasionally exposed to fumes or airborne particles and toxic or caustic chemicals. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate but may require the use of hearing protection occasionally.
