The expected hiring range for this position is:
$88,800.00-$116,900.00.

About the Role:

The Fermilab Accelerator Division Mechanical Support Department is seeking a Thermal FluidsMechanical Engineer who plans and performs engineering tasks, which includes research, design, and development of small to medium engineering projects or portions of large projects in compliance with all applicable local, state, and federal regulations, requirements and standards, and all Department of Energy (DOE) orders. Assignments typically include: equipment design and development, test of materials, preparation of specifications, coordination of manpower required to manufacture, and install/ test projects.

What your day-to-day as a Thermal Fluids Mechanical Engineer at Fermilab will look like:
  • Utilize fundamental mechanical engineering concepts and principles to complete assignments and develop familiarization with the Laboratory's method of project engineering, from the design stage through review, procurement, fabrication, installation, test and operation.
  • Be involved in the planning, implementation, and documentation of the installation of upgrades and repairs to the mechanical and vacuum systems that support the accelerator by working with machine stakeholders, scientists, engineers, drafter/designers and technicians.
  • Be involved in the mechanical design, analysis, fabrication/construction, and installation of devices and equipment for the accelerator complex including beamline elements (such as, collimators and beam instrumentation), remote positioning devices, support structures, and vacuum systems.
  • Participate in and lead efforts involving general mechanical-system design, mechanical stress analysis, and thermal analysis.
  • Design and plan the lifting/rigging of heavy components which will involve material handling equipment and techniques
  • Be responsible for directing the activities of drafters/designers, and technicians on their projects
  • Direct the activities of co-op engineering students and interns on their projects.
  • Abide by and be responsible for performing all duties in accordance with all environmental, health and safety regulations and practices pertinent to this position.


Skills and Attributes for Success:
  • Bachelor's Degree in an applicable Engineering discipline from an ABET accredited institution with 4+ years of engineering experience, or a Master's or PhD in an applicable Engineering discipline for an ABET accredited institution with 2+ years of experience.


Applicable Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required:
  • Analyzes data and performs engineering calculations. Develops designs of specific parts, components, or phases of a project.
  • Develops specifications, designs, and documents for complex engineering design solutions. Work involves applying a variety of standard engineering techniques to assignments which have clear and specified objectives.
  • Plans small projects from inception to completion and brings them to operating status.
  • Participates in procurement, manufacturing, installation, testing, and operation. Takes a lead role in one or more of these project processes.
  • Assists in the development of cost estimates, as well as the monitoring of budgetary obligations.
  • With review and approval of supervisor, commits hardware and financial resources, ensuring conformance to specifications and cost/time constraints.
  • Serves on or takes a lead role in safety panels, review committees, and other subcommittees as assigned.
  • Provides technical direction to draftspersons, designers, engineering associates, technicians, or less senior engineers, as assigned.
  • May participate in technical conferences and publication. May provide supervision or leadership of a team including hiring, promotions, performance reviews, training, disciplinary actions, team exits, and other duties as assigned.
  • Performs other duties as assigned by supervisor.
  • Abides by and is responsible for performing all duties in accordance with all environmental, health and safety regulations and practices pertinent to this position.
