Full Job Description
Thermal Analyst
Mechanical Engineer II
NASA Glenn Research Center
Brook Park, Ohio

HX5 is currently seeking an experienced Mechanical Engineer/Thermal Analyst to join our team in Brook Park, Ohio in support of the GEARS contract at NASA Glenn Research Center.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

A Thermal Analyst is needed to support NASA's Research Technology Mission Directorate (RTMD) in the pursuit of advanced non-nuclear power and energy storage technologies to enable near term lunar surface missions to survive the lunar night. Conventional advanced lithium-ion battery systems lack the energy density required for future mission needs, prompting NASA to explore regenerative fuel cells (RFCs), which offer a higher energy density than current battery technology. RFCs operate by generating heat, water, and electricity from hydrogen and oxygen during discharge, then using electrical power to electrolyze water back into hydrogen and oxygen at high pressures during recharge. The Sustained Energy for the Lunar surface ENabled by Electrochemistry (SELENE) Project is tasked with maturing this RFC technology for future deployment on the lunar surface as part of NASA's Moon Base. This effort includes designing, integrating, and testing an autonomous RFC system within a thermal vacuum (TVAC) environment.

The Thermal Systems Engineer will lead the development of the thermal subsystem for the RFC system. Responsibilities include defining thermal requirements, designing and analyzing the thermal architecture, and developing hardware and analytical approaches that support RFC operation inside a TVAC chamber. The role requires close collaboration with systems engineers, test personnel, and project leadership to ensure the subsystem performs reliably under lunar relevant thermal conditions and aligns with broader SELENE Project goals.

Required Skills:
  • Basic understanding of systems engineering principles for the development of thermal requirements.
  • Knowledge of thermal control systems and devices.
  • Experience with thermal analytical codes, preferably Thermal Desktop.
  • Some knowledge of thermal vacuum and thermal cycling test principles.

Education/Experience:

Mechanical or Aerospace Engineering degree from ABET accredited program with the following education and experience:
  • Bachelor's degree and two (2) to five (5) years of relevant experience
  • Master's degree and zero (0) to three (3) years of relevant experience

Other Position Requirements:
  • Proof of U.S. Citizenship
  • Must be able to complete a U.S. government background investigation

HX5 offers a competitive salary and benefits package to include:
  • Relocation Assistance
  • Medical/Dental/Vision Insurance
  • 401(k) plan with Company Match
  • Paid Holidays
  • Accrued Paid Time Off
  • Parental Leave
  • Life Insurance
  • Tuition Reimbursement
  • Medical and Dependent Care Flexible Spending Accounts
  • Pet Insurance
