Job Description
This recruitment is open until the needs of the department are met and may close without prior notice.
Under the direction of Theatre Director or his/her designee, the Theatre Production Supervisor coordinates, supervises, and utilizes theatre facilities to meet the technical and production requirements of all theatre events including Broadway-style productions, symphony series, community groups, and rental companies. This position also directs the purchase, upkeep, and replacement of theatre equipment and supplies.

Typical Duties Performed

  • Directs the maintenance of all lighting, sound, and rigging equipment.
  • Recommends capital improvement projects of the Theatre.
  • Prepares annual backstage operational budget, tracks, and records accurate expenditures.
  • Meets with promoters alongside the Theatre Director or his/her designee to determine technical requirements for lights and plots, set drawings, and ground plans per contract specifications.
  • Works directly and closely with Technical Directors and stage crews to implement decisions made on set ups, costume, lighting, and other aspects of the production within budget.
  • Selects, trains, supervises, and evaluates professional, technical, and manual stage crew members; assigns crew calls.
  • Rents and purchases equipment and supplies.
  • Directs the load in, execution, and set strike of incoming shows.
  • Calls cues for lights, sound, and flymen during symphony, rental dance groups, and community events.
  • Responsible for the safe and smooth staging of all performances.
  • Certifies the safety of all special effects, handing units, flats, and other scenic elements, managing the repair or replacement of unsafe equipment.
  • Employs tact, diplomacy, and unlimited patience while working with a wide variety of amateur and professional directors, stage managers, producers, actors, singers, dancers, musicians, promotors, over-hire stage crews, and other production personnel.
  • Adheres to City and departmental policies and procedures; performs related work duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications
Knowledge of:Technical theatre and stage management techniques including lighting and sound plots, stage sets and drawings, rigging designs, and ground plans. State-of-the-Art theatre equipment and materials. Safety rules and practices pertaining to backstage and theatre work.

Ability to: Work varying and irregular hours to include evenings, holidays, and weekends. Organize complex sets within tight deadlines. Effectively select, train, and supervise large staff of professional, technical, and manual labor stage crew members. Establish and maintain effective working relationships with visiting production companies, producers, directors, and all theatre personnel. Perform purchase, upkeep, and skillfully use various types of technical theatre equipment. Work requiring physical strength, dexterity, and endurance. Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing. Lead and make critical decisions pertaining to the requirements of shows, performances, and other projects.
EXPERIENCE AND EDUCATION:
Experience: Minimum of three years technical theatre experience, with a year at the supervisory level within the Performing Arts field.
Education: Bachelor's degree in Theatre, Arts Administration, Fine Arts, Communications, or related field is required.

LICENSE OR CERTIFICATE:
Possession of a valid California Class C driver license is required.
Supplemental Information

Appointments are normally made at the first step of the salary range. Consideration and approval for a salary higher than the first step is done on a case-by-case basis.

Candidates who do not pass any portion of the above processes will be disqualified and removed from proceeding in the selection process.
