Position Summary:

The Technology Manager, Asset Performance Management (APM) is responsible for leading the enterprise-wide strategy, development, deployment, and continuous improvement of Sylvamo's APM capabilities. This role drives initiatives that enhance asset reliability, Overall Machine Efficiency (OME), optimize maintenance practices, and leverages digital technologies-such as predictive analytics, machine learning, and IoT-to reduce downtime and improve operational performance. He or she acts as the strategic bridge between the Manufacturing Digital Transformation team, strategic business partners, mill operations, capital engineering, maintenance / reliability organizations, and IT/OT teams. The ideal candidate combines strong understanding of industrial maintenance/reliability fundamentals and integrated paper mill operations with a passion for digital innovation.

The APM Technology Manager leads Sylvamo's enterprise APM strategy by driving alignment across mills, maintenance, reliability, and digital transformation teams while overseeing the development and deployment of cutting edge APM technologies, standards, and work processes. This role ensures consistent implementation of asset data structures, functional descriptions, predictive analytics, and condition monitoring capabilities, partnering closely with IT/OT to integrate APM solutions with core manufacturing systems. The manager also champions organizational change management, training, and capability building to embed data driven maintenance practices, while enabling value realization across the organization.

Key Responsibilities:

Technical Leadership:

  • Guiding Technical Direction: Defining and implementing the technical components for asset performance management projects, choosing appropriate technologies and methodologies.


  • Ensuring Quality: Defining and implementing best practices, conducting product reviews, and ensuring the equipment, hardware and software is well-designed, scalable, and maintainable.


  • Sustainability: Responsible for developing an enterprise approach and working closely with mill teams to sustain paper, pulp, power & recovery APMs throughout the Sylvamo fleet of mills.


  • Alignment: Coordination of efforts with all APM systems to enable mill-wide optimization capabilities.


  • Problem Solving: Identifying and resolving technical issues, collaborating with the team to find effective solutions.


  • Staying Up to Date: Keeping abreast of the latest technologies and industry trends.


  • Engage with external vendors, system integrators, and analytics partners to ensure alignment with Sylvamo standards and long-term strategy.


Growing Capabilities:

  • Mentoring and Coaching: Establish a collaborative network among control engineers, offering guidance and fostering a supportive team environment.


  • Communication: Serving as an intermediary between the vendor product development teams and key stakeholders, including product managers, clients, and senior management.


  • Enhance Skills and Knowledge: Work with organizational change management, vendors, and mills to create best practices, training materials, and workshops to improve the skill level of maintenance and operational teams throughout the organization.


Project Execution:

  • Planning and Prioritization: Assisting with project planning, task assignment, and prioritization to ensure projects are delivered on time and within budget.


  • Monitoring Progress: Follow project progress, identify potential roadblocks, and take proactive steps to mitigate risks.


  • Develop training, competency models, toolkits, and adoption strategies that support mill teams in using APM tools effectively


  • Drive cultural adoption of data-driven maintenance and reliability work processes.


  • Serve as coach and advisor for facility reliability engineers, planners, and maintenance leaders.


  • Champion adoption of data-driven and risk based maintenance practices with standardized work processes.


Required Skills & Knowledge

  • Associate's or Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Paper Science, Computer Science, Operations, or related field.


  • 10+ years experience in manufacturing, maintenance & reliability, and/or industrial digital transformation roles.


  • Prior leadership experience both directly and indirectly.


  • Proven ability to lead and manage complex technical projects, from concept through implementation and optimization.


  • Strong verbal and written communication and collaboration skills.


  • Demonstrated experience with APM tools (e.g., AVEVA, AspenTech, GE APM, IBM Maximo APM, SAP PM, etc.).


  • Proficiency with various device and sensor technologies, measurement principles, and data acquisition systems along with the ability to learn new and unfamiliar systems.


  • Familiarity with industrial automation systems, SCADA, and PLCs.


  • Ability to communicate complex subjects in a manner that is understood across stakeholders at all impacted levels of the organization.


  • Demonstrated capability to mentor and develop technical talent within the organization.


  • Understands how APM insights translate into actionable work orders and planner/scheduler workflows with backlog management.


  • Ability to extract, compile and interpolate data from various source systems.


  • Ability to shape vendor product direction via feedback and pilots while ensuring technical vendors / partners can operate successfully at scale.


Language Skills & Travel Requirements:

  • English: Proficient. Portuguese, French, or Swedish is a plus.


  • This position requires travel to manufacturing sites in Brazil, France, Sweden, Finland and the United States. During project development and implementation, travel could be greater than 50%.
