Employment in this role is conditional upon successful execution of the contract by the client.

 

The Work

The Technical Writer IV is responsible for writing, editing, reviewing and maintaining various documents and publications for the Program Office in accordance with Standard Operating Procedures (SOP) and Client's standards.

 

Responsibilities

Key Responsibilities

  • Creates/Designs/Maintains/Edits various publications, which may include but are not limited to technical documents, reports, student guides, instructor guides, course material, and other reference materials, ensuring adherence to standards, formats, and content/structure integrity and usability. This includes interface with the end-product production department.
  • Collaborates with instructional systems designers, distributed learning designers, and subject matter experts to acquire information and content for the production of original documentation.
  • Ensures that materials are consistent with the client's policies, Training and Performance Office standards, and established formats, as well as other information presented during training.
  • Consults on or select illustrative materials for inclusion in various publications. These include, but are not limited to photographs, drawings, sketches, diagrams, and charts.
  • Develops documents that meet the style requirements for the publication, and ensure that they are written at the appropriate level.
  • Provides documentation and publications to meet the requests/needs of clients, subject matter experts, and/or management.
  • Provides guidance and troubleshooting assistance to clients/co-workers for various programs and organization templates.
  • Provides assistance with publication aesthetics, to include media, format, graphics, animations, and difficult format conversions.
  • Provides advice on best practices and options for documentation and, in some cases, create custom templates if needed.
  • Advises and assists authors during the writing, development, conceptualization, and/or production of publications.
  • Provides guidance/consultation to junior Technical Writers.
  • Performs initial reviews of publications/documentation and provide recommendations for revisions to scope, format, content, etc., as needed.
  • Perform final reviews of proposed publications for tone, design, layout, editorial, and production specification aspects before release.
  • Applies a consistent set of style, grammar, and punctuation practices. May also be required to establish and/or modify existing style and standards.
  • Maintains files and copies of work assignments and revisions according to recommendations and/or established best practices/standards. May also be required to establish and/or modify existing best practices and standards.
  • Other duties as assigned.

  • A Bachelor’s degree in a related field, plus a minimum of eight (8) years’ experience in editing and publication development, two of which need to have been completed at a Technical Writer III level or equivalent.
  • Must have an advanced-level understanding of publication design concepts.
  • Secret Clearnce is required.
  • Due to the nature of work at the client’s site, U.S. Citizenship is required.
  • Must be able to pass a background check. May require additional background checks as required by projects and/or clients at any time during employment.

Minimum Skills:

  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Excellent command of the English language to include grammar, spelling, and punctuation.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and organizational skills; and attention to detail. Must also possess the motivation to start and complete projects with minimal oversight.
  • Strong time management, project management, and multi-tasking skills.
  • Ability to acquire and present technical information through independent reading, interviews with subject-matter specialists, observation of tests and experiments, interpretation of diagrams, or other appropriate methods.
  • Ability to tailor writing and publications for a specific type of audience.
  • Advanced skills in Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Publisher, Adobe Acrobat Pro and Reader, Notepad, and Paint.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Access, Media Player, and Snipping Tool (or other screen capture software).
  • Intermediate skills in Microsoft SharePoint.

Working Conditions
