Technical Writer (Engineering)

Position Summary

The Technical Writer (Engineering) develops, organizes, and maintains clear, accurate, and user-focused technical documentation for engineering, manufacturing, and other internal, and external stakeholders. The successful candidate gathers information from subject-matter experts and translates complex technical information into procedures, manuals, technical specifications, work instructions, and process documentation.

Working closely with Engineering, Manufacturing, Quality, Configuration Management, and Program Management, this role supports document validation, verification, controlled release, and ongoing revision activities. The Technical Writer may also support configuration management functions, including document change packages, revision tracking, release-status maintenance, controlled archiving, and audit readiness, as business needs require.

Primary Responsibilities

• Gather information from subject-matter experts and develop clear, concise procedures, manuals, technical specifications, work instructions, and process documentation.
• Translate complex engineering and manufacturing information into accurate, organized, and user-friendly content.
• Develop and maintain templates and documentation standards that promote consistency across technical deliverables.
• Review technical documents for completeness, formatting, consistency, readability, and alignment with applicable organizational requirements.
• Support document validation, verification, review, and controlled release activities.
• Coordinate with document owners and reviewers to incorporate comments, resolve open issues, and meet required delivery dates.
• Support configuration management activities by preparing or updating controlled documents associated with Revision Notices (RNs), Engineering Change Orders (ECOs), and other engineering change packages.
• Assist with document revision tracking, version history, release status, and the controlled archiving of obsolete revisions.
• Help maintain accurate configuration records and provide document history or supporting records for internal and external audits.
• Maintain organized project files in SharePoint or similar collaboration, document-management, and version-control systems.
• Manage multiple writing and documentation projects simultaneously while maintaining attention to detail and technical accuracy.
• Recommend improvements to documentation and change-control workflows that increase efficiency while preserving document integrity.

Required Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree (Master's preferred) and a minimum of 5 years of experience writing technical documents preferred.
• Ability to read, interpret, and understand drawings, blueprints, operation sheets, wiring diagrams, and written instructions.
• Ability to translate complex information into simple, user-friendly content.
• Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail.
• Ability to meet deadlines, work independently, and manage multiple projects simultaneously.
• Ability to build and maintain productive relationships with internal and external clients and technical subject-matter experts.
• Proficiency with Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Visio, and Project.
• Excellent typing, written, grammatical, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills.
• Competency with SharePoint or similar collaboration, file-management, document-management, or version-control systems.
• Must be a U.S. Citizen.

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience working with multiple technical disciplines.
• Experience in an engineering development and manufacturing environment.
• Experience in aerospace, defense, electronics, manufacturing, or another regulated industry.
• Familiarity aligning technical documentation with DoD / Military standards and/or contractual Data Item Descriptions (DIDs).
• Experience writing government proposals or other customer-facing technical and marketing communications.
• Familiarity with laboratory equipment and engineering test documentation.
• Advanced proofreading and editing skills.
• Familiarity with ISO 9001, AS9100, or similar quality-management standards.
• Working knowledge of Adobe Creative Suite.

In compliance with pay transparency requirements, the salary range for this role in New Jersey is $75,000 - $103,000 Annually. This is not a guarantee of compensation or salary, as final offer amount may vary based on factors including but not limited to job-related knowledge and skills, experience, and internal consistency.
