Join us as a Technical Writer / Communications Specialist supporting the Joint Pathology Center's research, education, and public outreach mission. In this role, you'll transform complex scientific and technical information into clear, engaging communications that support research collaboration and public engagement initiatives.

Location: Joint Pathology Center, 606 Stephen Sitter Ave, Silver Spring, MD 20910

Position Description: The Technical Writer / Communications Specialist provides professional writing, editing, documentation, and outreach support for Joint Pathology Center (JPC) research, education, and public engagement activities.

Minimum/General Experience: 5 years of professional writing, editing, and documentation experience

Minimum Education: Bachelors Degree in information technology, communication, health sciences, business administration, or related field

Essential Skills/Qualifications:
  • Above average experience researching, writing, and editing scientific communications
  • Above average experience with various communications materials (e.g., scientific articles, manuscripts, posters, protocols, brochures, speeches, presentations, briefing materials)
  • Above average experience translating complex scientific, regulatory, and policy information into clear, audience-appropriate materials
  • Above average experience conducting, recording, and transcribing interviews with researchers to gather information
  • Experience participating in outreach events
  • Experience with website and digital content support
  • Experience with Microsoft SharePoint
  • Experience supporting a federal agency
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills

  • Assignment Location - Joint Pathology Center, 606 Stephen Sitter Ave, Silver Spring, MD 20910
  • Sedentary Work - Exerting up to 10 pounds of force occasionally and/or a negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects.
  • Typing, communicating, repetitive motions.
  • Close visual acuity to prepare and analyze data, view computer monitors and read. May need to view presentation screens and other visual aids in a virtual setting.
  • Inside environmental conditions with protection from outside elements.

Security: Active DoD Secret Clearance; Ability to obtain DoD Top Secret Clearance as needed
  • U.S. Citizenship

DoD Clearance Consists of a review of up to but not limited to:
  • Covers 10 year period and in some instances lifetime events
  • OPM Security Investigations Index (SII)
  • DOD Defense Central Investigations Index (DCII)
  • National Agency Check (NAC) records

Tasks/activities include, but are not limited to:
  • Writes and edits research and educational materials, including scientific articles, manuscripts, posters, protocols, lay brochures, speeches, and presentations
  • Develops content for special media projects, ceremonies, news conferences, public education campaigns, and public meetings
  • Articulates interrelationships among agency programs and initiatives in written products
  • Participates in outreach events and develops presentations tailored to target audiences
  • Prepares briefing materials and prepared remarks for leadership and subject matter experts
  • Analyzes, organizes, and presents information in accordance with departmental policies and accepted practices
  • Develops original content for DRP and JPC websites, including scientific articles, reports, abstracts, and educational materials
  • Manages and posts content using SharePoint, intranet, and internet platforms
  • Tracks posted content and serves as an internal communications liaison for reviewing, editing, and publishing materials
  • Conducts interviews with researchers, scientific experts, administrators, and staff
  • Records, transcribes, and edits interviews, meetings, and events for publication
  • Coordinates logistics for interviews and events, including space, equipment, and scheduling with internal and external partners
  • Transcribes, edits, and submits articles, reports, interviews, posters, and other materials within five (5) business days of events
  • Submits all materials for review prior to publication or presentation
  • Maintains a coordinated work schedule and submits weekly work logs for metrics and tracking
  • Communicates issues impacting timelines or quality

Compensation & Benefits: The annual projected pay range for this position is $87,103 - $97,997 with consideration being given to various factors including but not limited to qualifications, experience, job responsibilities, and geographic location.
