Full Job Description
The Technical Specialist will join our Engineering department and serve as a technical resource to the Sales team by reviewing coating specifications, supporting customer solutions, estimating, and helping translate field conditions into accurate scopes of work and proposals.

This role is ideal for a technically strong coatings professional who understands industrial environments, coating systems, surface preparation, inspection requirements, application methods, and industry standards such as AMPP.

About the Position

The Technical Specialist will provide technical coating expertise to Groome's Engineering and Sales teams, with a focus on coating specification review, customer-facing technical support, estimating, and proposal development for power generation and heavy industrial customers.

Success requires strong knowledge of coating technologies, surface preparation requirements, corrosion protection, quality control, inspection practices, and industry standards. The ideal candidate can write clear coating specifications, interpret customer

requirements, support competitive bids, and help Groome deliver technically sound, comprehensive solutions.

Key Responsibilities
  • Coating Specifications: Review coating specifications, scopes of work, surface preparation requirements, inspection hold points, and application criteria aligned with customer needs and industry standards.
  • Sales & Proposal Support: Partner with Sales and Operations to support site evaluations, estimating, bid strategy, technical clarifications, proposal content, and quote creation.
  • Standards & Technical Compliance: Apply AMPP and customer-specific standards to coatings evaluations, specifications, inspection requirements, and quality expectations.
  • Field & Customer Support: Participate in site walks, pre-bid meetings, field reviews, customer discussions, and project handoffs to clarify technical requirements and reduce execution risk.
  • Quality & Inspection Support: Define inspection requirements, documentation expectations, acceptance criteria, surface preparation checks, DFT requirements, environmental controls, and coating repair procedures.
  • Cross-Functional Collaboration: Work closely with Sales, Operations, Safety, project management, and field leadership to support accurate quotes, executable scopes, safe planning, and successful project delivery.

Preferred Power Generation & Industrial Coatings Background
  • Experience supporting coating projects in natural gas and coal-fired power generation, utilities, IPPs, co-ops, industrial boilers, steel, cement, pulp and paper, refinery, chemical, manufacturing, or similar heavy industrial environments.
  • Strong understanding of corrosion protection, coating failures, surface preparation, abrasive blasting, waterjetting, abrasive media, containment, environmental controls, coating application, and repair procedures.
  • Ability to review coating specifications for tanks, ducts, stacks, structural steel, scrubbers, precipitators, baghouses, ash handling systems, concrete surfaces, secondary containment, and other industrial assets.
  • Familiarity with coating systems including epoxies, urethanes, zinc-rich primers, high-temperature coatings, linings, chemical-resistant systems, immersion service coatings, and specialty protective coatings.
  • Experience reviewing drawings, customer standards, inspection reports, field conditions, photos, bid documents, and project requirements to develop practical scopes and recommendations.
  • Preferred certifications or training may include AMPP / NACE CIP, SSPC PCI, Protective Coating Specialist, or related coatings, corrosion, inspection, or materials credentials.

Power generation and heavy industrial customers need coating solutions that are technically sound, clearly specified, safely executable, and aligned with demanding operating environments. This role will help Groome strengthen proposal quality, improve customer confidence, and deliver coating solutions that protect critical assets and support long-term reliability.

If you are a coatings professional with strong estimating and proposal-writing ability, industry standards knowledge, and the technical confidence to support Sales and Engineering in heavy industrial environments, we'd love to talk.
