Technical Lead

Position Summary

InflexionPoint is currently looking for a Technical Lead. The Technical Lead will be responsible for designing, developing, and implementing control systems for industrial processes and applications, while providing deep technical leadership for automation hardware and software solutions. This role will support building automation applications for critical lab areas, including biosafety containment labs, and will ensure optimal system performance through strong technical knowledge of PLC- and SCADA-based systems, instrumentation, and control system integration.

Job Duties and Responsibilities
  • Lead and mentor a team of engineers, guiding system design and development efforts while providing technical direction to ensure successful project delivery.
  • Analyze system requirements and performance, monitor using data-driven techniques, and optimize while resolving issues related to efficiency, stability, and accuracy.
  • Design control systems and develop control algorithms based on identified requirements.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional and multidisciplinary teams (including QA, engineering, and project management) to support system design, integration, and validation.
  • Develop and implement control strategies using appropriate programming languages and tools.
  • Design and configure control hardware, including sensors, actuators, and programmable logic controllers (PLCs).
  • Create and modify control system schematics, wiring diagrams, and other technical documentation.
  • Integrate control systems with existing or new hardware and software components.
  • Perform system testing, troubleshooting, and debugging to ensure proper functionality.
  • Prepare technical documentation, including system specifications, design documents, and user manuals.
  • Create reports and presentations to communicate project status, results, and recommendations to stakeholders.
  • Ensure compliance with relevant standards, regulations, and industry best practices.
  • Provide technical support and guidance to other engineers and technicians.
  • Stay updated with advancements in control system technologies and industry trends.
  • Provide deep technical knowledge of automation hardware and software, including PLCs/SCADA-based systems.
  • Support Rockwell-based systems, including Rockwell PLCs, FactoryTalk for SCADA, FactoryTalk for Historian, and Rockwell FactoryTalk View SE experience.
  • Support applications involving SIL 2 IO points.
  • Integrate DDC controllers using JACE platforms (Niagara Framework) for building automation and interoperability across systems.
  • Lead technical efforts for building automation systems serving critical lab areas (BSL labs), including systems for maintaining negative pressure within the lab.
  • Coordinate technical integration with vendor-provided systems such as fire alarm and waste contaminant systems that come with their own PLCs.
  • Support installation-related scopes involving controls system wiring, pneumatic tubing, valves, damper actuators, and fiber within the electrical scope.
  • Interface with office-area controls systems.
  • Support or lead instrumentation specification activities.


Requirements

Education, Certifications and Experience
  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in Electrical Engineering, Control Systems Engineering, or a related field.
  • Proven experience as a Control System Engineer, preferably with at least 5 years of relevant experience.
  • Strong knowledge of control system principles, algorithms, and methodologies specifically for building management systems
  • Proficiency in programming languages such as C/C++, MATLAB, or Python.
  • Experience with industrial control systems (PLCs, DCS, SCADA) and associated software.
  • Familiarity with control system modeling and simulation tools.
  • Experience with DDC/BAS systems and Niagara/JACE integration
  • Excellent problem-solving skills and the ability to analyze complex systems.
  • Strong communication and collaboration skills.
  • Must have deep technical knowledge of automation hardware and software, specifically Rockwell PLCs and Rockwell FactoryTalk View SE experience.
  • Experience with specifying instrumentation is required.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience with Building Automation System is ideally required but can train if a strong candidate is found.
  • Ideally, candidates will have experience working in the instrumentation and controls space with the federal government.

Working Environment

Duties are performed in an office environment and workshop, but will also require travel to customer sites/locations to perform analysis, installation, training maintenance, etc. Must be willing to travel approximately 30%; must be willing to work in a variety of manufacturing facilities. Must be able to routinely use standard office equipment which includes, but is not limited to, computers, phones, photocopiers, and filing cabinets. Minimal exposure to excessive noise or adverse environmental issues.

Physical Demands

Must be able to sit and/or stand for prolonged hours consistent with the average workday; to operate a computer and other office equipment, including but not limited to computer, printer, etc. Must be able to climb stairs and/or ladders; must be able to stoop, kneel, crouch and/or crawl; must be able to move, transport, position, place, install, remove and/or replace various types of equipment; must be able to lift 50-70 lbs. unassisted.

Salary Description

$130,000 - $160,000 per year
